CCSS executive director Michel Turcotte says the CCSS is conducting most services\u2014such as dealing with questions regarding health and dental insurance\u2014over the phone or by email. But services that can\u2019t be done remotely\u2014for example, the food bank and Walk Safer\u2014have been shut down, with employees still getting paid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Camosun College Student Society is continuing to pay all of its employees,\u201d says Turcotte. \u201cBoth regular and student employees, currently. In terms of student employees, they\u2019re being paid until the end of what would be their traditional work period.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/CCSS-logo.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-13653\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/CCSS-logo-300x291.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"291\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/CCSS-logo-300x291.png 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/CCSS-logo-180x174.png 180w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/03\/CCSS-logo.png 324w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>At the University of Victoria, the University of Victoria Students\u2019 Society has temporarily laid off some of its part-time student employees and salaried union workers, according to a story published in <em>Martlet<\/em>\u00a0last week. Turcotte says it would go against the CCSS\u2019 values to lay off staff when they have money to keep them employed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it would be contrary to the values of the Camosun College Student Society\u2014and most student societies in general\u2014to be laying their staff off at this time if they have sufficient money on hand to make up that difference,\u201d says Turcotte.<\/p>\n<p>Turcotte says it makes him feel sad when any business or non-profit that has the means to continue paying their employees lays them off in order to save money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMost employers save for a rainy day,\u201d he says. \u201cThis is certainly a rainy day, and this is the time to step up and support your employees and your communities; to not do that, I think, is reprehensible if you have the means to do it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turcotte says the CCSS\u2019 emergency food bank is currently inaccessible to students because the CCSS doesn\u2019t have control over locked-down buildings at the college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe food bank is, unfortunately, in our offices, so when our offices are closed, that\u2019s inaccessible,\u201d says Turcotte. \u201cWe had to balance access for those sorts of services off against the concern for the well-being of our staff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Over the last month, says Turcotte, the CCSS has been working to put these support mechanisms in place to better allow the CCSS to function remotely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe sort of saw this coming,\u201d says Turcotte.<\/p>\n<p>General inquiries can be sent to <a href=\"mailto:ccss@camosunstudent.org\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ccss@camosunstudent.org<\/a>, while health and dental questions can be directed to <a href=\"mailto:ccssplan@camosun.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">ccssplan@camosun.ca<\/a>.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) officially began operating remotely on Wednesday, March 18, due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
