<\/a>One of those logistics was being able to use the inter-library loan infrastructure\u2014a system where a library can access other libraries\u2019 material; this allows the college to use Canada Post\u2019s library rate. There was also the issue of what a reasonable amount to mail was. There\u2019s a limit of five items per package, says Harrison, but users can get multiple packages if they want more.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe want this to be a positive,\u201d says Harrison. \u201cIt\u2019s not just a panic response mode.\u201d<\/p>\n
On top of adapting fairly quickly, a main concern for the college is packaging orders safely. Harrison says that staff doesn\u2019t handle retuned parcels for a number of days. Another issue is lending out textbooks within a way that\u2019s in compliance with copyright law, she says, such as possibly lending out portions or sections.<\/p>\n
\u201cThat\u2019s a big issue for students,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019re not going to lend textbooks because one student gets it and then nobody else has access to it. That\u2019s a bit of a challenge for us.\u201d<\/p>\n
When it comes to reading fiction, Harrison says she likes to have a hard copy of a book in hand. But the library can deliver most mediums, she says.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe\u2019ve got something like 50,000\u2014some huge number\u2014e-books available,\u201d says Harrison. \u201cWe have thousands and thousands of journals available. We have some streaming video. Our digital content is really rich and deep.\u201d<\/p>\n
