Camosun Diagnostic Medical Sonography program launch delayed<\/p>\n

Camosun\u2019s new Diagnostic Medical Sonography program has been delayed by one year, and will now launch in May of 2021. See camosun.ca\/learn\/programs\/diagnostic-medical-sonography<\/a> for more info.<\/p>\n

Camosun suspends courses at Belmont High School<\/p>\n

Camosun has suspended courses at Belmont High School in Langford until September 2021. Online courses and upgrading programs continue to be offered tuition-free for eligible students. The Ministry of Advanced Education, Skills and Training is also providing funding to support new programs in the fields of Health Care Assistant, and Educational Assistant and Community Support. These programs are expected to start in the fall.<\/p>\n

Charger\u2019s women\u2019s volleyball athlete receives prestigious award<\/p>\n

On April 20, Camosun Chargers women\u2019s volleyball athlete Katie Wayling capped off her five-year run with the Chargers by receiving the President\u2019s Cup award. The President\u2019s Cup recognizes outstanding academic and athletic achievement. Over her tenure with the Chargers, Wayling received several recognitions, including the CCAA National Scholar Athlete award, a PACWEST Second Team All-Star award, the CCAA Academic All-Canadian award, and two PACWEST Academic Excellence awards.<\/p>\n

Victoria Writers\u2019 Society extends competition deadline<\/p>\n

The Victoria Writers\u2019 Society is extending the submission deadline for its 19th annual writing competition. The new deadline is June 1. The competition is geared toward Vancouver Island writers of short fiction, creative non-fiction, and poetry. The first-prize winner nets $300, with $200 going to second place. Publication in the Island Writer <\/em>journal will be offered to first and second place winners, as well as two honourable mentions. Entries require a $25 fee; visit victoriawriters.ca<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n

Camosun tests new safety gear for kiteboarders<\/p>\n

Camosun College was one of two certified testing facilities for a new kite control bar quick-release system that was recently approved for kiteboards. The new international standard ISO 21853 improves safety for kiteboarders and kitesurfers, and was developed by the Global Kitesports Association in partnership with the International Organization for Standardization. The other testing facility was Fraunhofer Society in Rostock, Germany.<\/p>\n

Camosun alumni gets Rising Star Award<\/p>\n

On April 28, Camosun College alumni and Victoria Women\u2019s Transition House HR manager Sharde Long was given the 2020 Rising Star Award on behalf of the Chartered Professionals in Human Resources of British Columbia and Yukon association. The award was presented in response to Long\u2019s Respectful Workplaces training program.
