The college is offering most of its student services remotely for the fall semester, and so is the Camosun College Student Society (CCSS).<\/p>\n<p>An exception to that is part of the UPass validation process, where, through the Camosun website, students can book an appointment to come and pick up their UPass, which will have a BC Transit validation sticker on it.<\/p>\n<p>Most other CCSS services, says CCSS executive director Michel Turcotte, are available online. Students can opt out of the health and dental plan, for example, through the CCSS website.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/CCSS_logo_with_bcfswhite-background.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-19372\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/CCSS_logo_with_bcfswhite-background-300x300.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/CCSS_logo_with_bcfswhite-background-300x300.png 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/CCSS_logo_with_bcfswhite-background.png 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/04\/CCSS_logo_with_bcfswhite-background-150x150.png 150w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>WalkSafer has been postponed for the fall. The program has both volunteer and paid positions; Turcotte says the CCSS isn\u2019t doing any new hiring right now.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe tend to have a policy with any good employee, [if] they\u2019re coming back, we\u2019ll try to hire them again,\u201d says Turcotte. \u201cIn those situations, we\u2019re going to try to give first preference to those individuals in relation to outreach hiring that we might do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Turcotte says there won\u2019t be as much hiring as normal, given what\u2019s going on with the COVID-19 crisis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s just harder,\u201d says Turcotte. \u201cIt\u2019s difficult. We have to have a role for people to perform before we can hire them.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Some services that typically result in people gathering, like the student food bank, \u201cdon\u2019t work quite as well in the COVID reality,\u201d says Turcotte. But the CCSS has focused on other student services: for example, the student society put $25,000 towards the college\u2019s Erasing Barriers to Education Fund and $10,000 towards the Camosun Cares Campaign, a project that gives hampers featuring food prepared by the Culinary Arts program to students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve also invested money in a food hamper project being run by Camosun International to distribute food,\u201d says Turcotte. \u201cIt\u2019s not just international students, from my understanding.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CCSS has also contributed \u201cclose to $10,000\u201d to the college\u2019s Financial Aid Fund.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve been seeking to address student needs through that, and other people have come to the plate, as well,\u201d says Turcotte. \u201cPeople are trying to help, but it\u2019s difficult to meet all the needs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>See camosunstudent.org for more info on the services the CCSS is providing for students this fall.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>While Camosun College\u2019s campuses remain quiet, students and staff are gearing up for a semester that is, in every way, new.
