Starting October 1, a performance of Vivaldi\u2019s <em>Four Seasons <\/em>can be streamed on the symphony\u2019s website.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to continue to evolve with the way the world is working,\u201d says Victoria Symphony director of marketing Jill Smillie. \u201cObviously we can\u2019t have a live audience, nor can we have all our musicians on stage, so we\u2019re filming things and then posting them on our website.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The recorded performances will be available for 30 days; Smillie is happy to see the musicians back in action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey haven\u2019t played together in six months,\u201d Smillie says about the symphony. \u201cTo see them, and hear their emotion and passion? Smillie says that instead of the usual ticket costs, Victoria Symphony\u2014the largest non-profit music organization on Vancouver Island\u2014will be asking for donations to keep things running through the upcoming seasons.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will be asking for donations because we\u2019re still continuing to keep musicians engaged,\u201d she says. \u201cOur costs are still significant, and we don\u2019t have any ticket revenue, so we\u2019re hoping that people will continue to support us by making a donation.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The rest of the virtual season is still being finalized, but Smillie says that there will most likely be a concert every two or three weeks.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s hard to program long-term when the rules are changing all the time,\u201d she says. \u201cI guess the theme here is \u2018maybe.\u2019 Nothing is off the table aside from full concerts like we traditionally have.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Vivaldi\u2019s <em>Four Seasons <\/em>is a classic, but the orchestra isn&#8217;t limited to playing classical music exclusively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe play the traditional Mozart and Beethoven, but we also do new music too. We\u2019ve done shows with <em>Star Wars<\/em>, <em>The Wizard of Oz<\/em> where we showed the movie while we played the score, we also had <em>The Best of Queen<\/em> a couple of years ago\u2026 It\u2019s fairly robust and diverse programs that we play.\u201d says Smillie. \u201cWe like to say \u2018there\u2019s something for everybody.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Although this season is not the same as it would have been a few months ago, the symphony is looking forward to telling the community they\u2019re back in business.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019re going to see some people who are going to be thrilled with it, and you\u2019re going to see some people who are going to miss the in-person experience,\u201d says Smillie. \u201cIt\u2019s not intended to replace the live experience; it&#8217;s intended to keep connected.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Four Seasons<br \/>\n<\/em>Starting at 7:30 pm Thursday, October 1<br \/>\nFree, donations accepted<br \/>\n<a href=\"victoriasymphony.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">victoriasymphony.ca<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Victoria Symphony has announced that it is moving all of its concerts online during the COVID-19 crisis.
