{"id":20001,"date":"2020-10-05T11:00:01","date_gmt":"2020-10-05T18:00:01","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=20001"},"modified":"2020-11-18T09:39:30","modified_gmt":"2020-11-18T17:39:30","slug":"camosun-college-student-society-and-british-columbia-federation-of-students-take-part-in-campaign-urging-students-to-vote","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2020\/10\/05\/camosun-college-student-society-and-british-columbia-federation-of-students-take-part-in-campaign-urging-students-to-vote\/","title":{"rendered":"Camosun College Student Society and British Columbia Federation of Students take part in campaign urging students to vote"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) and the British Columbia Federation of Students (BCFS) have joined other student groups to take part in the provincial Take it Over Campaign, which urges students between the ages of 18 and 24 to pledge to vote in the upcoming provincial election on October 24.<\/p>\n<p>BCFS chairperson Tanysha Klassen says that the BCFS got involved in this campaign over the summer because there was talk back then about the election being called.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe were thinking about all the different ways that we can try and get this campaign through, even though social media\u2019s so saturated with every organization trying to do the same thing,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Take-it-Over.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-20002\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Take-it-Over-300x168.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Take-it-Over-300x168.png 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/10\/Take-it-Over.png 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>The BCFS decided to \u201creally work with the feelings that young people have had within the last year,\u201d says Klassen.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the issues students have on their minds, says Klassen, are for example, environmental issues, racial justice, housing affordability, and post-secondary education concerns.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe started thinking of really interesting things we could do\u2026 things like guerilla postering in cities,\u201d says Klassen. \u201cI know folks at the Camosun College Student Society [CCSS] are going to be doing postering around the city; we\u2019ve been doing things like that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CCSS external executive Quinn Cunningham says that the CCSS has been partnering with the University of Victoria Students\u2019 Society\u2014which is also involved in the campaign\u2014with the guerilla postering.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis vote is ours,\u201d Cunningham says. \u201cBy participating in this process, we\u2019re letting politicians know that students are a group of constituents that they need to listen to, that we need supports now more than ever with COVID. It&#8217;s really important that whoever gets elected in the riding understands that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Klassen says getting heard on social media can be a challenge. To help with this, the BCFS is using the services of Cameo, which, for a cost, gets celebrities to record custom videos for organizations to get their messages across. (Depending on the celebrity, rates can be anywhere from $50 to $1,427, for the site\u2019s most expensive celebrity, Floyd Mayweather.)<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo idea too crazy,\u201d says Klassen.<\/p>\n<p>Klassen says that the idea of younger people not voting is absolutely false.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the last BC election, voter turnout between people aged 18 to 24 increased eight percent,\u201d she says. \u201cThey actually ended up surpassing the number of voters aged 25 to 44\u2026 We\u2019re seeing young people more and more raising their voices on certain issues, so as long as politicians are talking about those issues, young people are going to get out to vote.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cunningham says it&#8217;s going to be a tough election, given the challenges that COVID-19 has brought with it, along with the usual struggle of having student voices heard.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cTake it over,\u201d says Cunningham. \u201cLet&#8217;s do this, students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>See <a href=\"http:\/\/www.takeitover.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">takeitover.ca<\/a> for more information.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) and the British Columbia Federation of Students (BCFS) have joined other student groups to take part in the provincial Take it Over Campaign, which urges students between the ages of 18 and 24 to pledge to vote in the upcoming provincial election on October 24.
