The result was Beats Antique, a genre-bending band based out of San Francisco. All three members of the group &#8211; Zoe Jakes, David Satori, and Tommy Cappel &#8211; play a plethora of instruments, which helps give them their unique edge.<\/p>\n<p>Fusing electronic with acoustic, Beats Antique formed when Jakes was contracted to write the aforementioned album of belly-dancing music. Jakes and Cappel had played together in previous bands Extra Action Marching Band and Yard Dog\u2019s Road Show<em> <\/em>and joined up with Satori to form Beats Antique three years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of our musician friends are into creating heavy, bass-styled music, which is awesome, but when we formed Beats Antique we were looking to create something a little sweeter and melodic,\u201d says Cappel. \u201cPeople always seem to draw attention to our eastern world influences, and as prominent as they are, we also have many western influences that make the genre-bending so fun.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2053\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2053\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/beats-sequoia-emmanuelle-for-web.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2053 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/beats-sequoia-emmanuelle-for-web-300x205.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"205\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/beats-sequoia-emmanuelle-for-web-300x205.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/beats-sequoia-emmanuelle-for-web-180x123.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/01\/beats-sequoia-emmanuelle-for-web.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2053\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Beats Antique are proudly leading the gyp-hop genre (photo by Sequoia Emmanuelle).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>A wide range of musical artists has inspired the band, from Amon Tobin to Dr. Dre to the jazz legends, and it\u2019s worked to fill out their sound with elements of many different genres. But a lot of the experimentation has come from the band internally.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you\u2019ve played an instrument for a while, you have the ability to hear things differently and in more depth, which makes for more creativity,\u201d says Cappel. \u201cThis is how we\u2019ve been able to create such an eclectic sound.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>In fact, the band is so eclectic they\u2019ve had to invent new genre names to describe themselves. \u201cIt\u2019s hard for us to sum up our style of music in a few words, but I suppose electronic acoustic or gypsy hip-hop&#8230; gyp-hop.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Like Beats Antique\u2019s style fusion, their upcoming show in Victoria will also be a fusion of electronic as well as live instruments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBetween Satori and I, we\u2019ll be playing lots of live percussion, piano, violin, viola, banjo, and Turkish saz, along with managing the electronic side of our performance,\u201d he says. \u201cFor our live performances we take our tracks and cut them all up by taking out the instruments we play live. Basically we\u2019re playing with ourselves via our electronic tracks and live instruments.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cappel promises not only a fun show full of variety, but a blissful, world-y groove as well.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cUsing other cultures\u2019 music brings positivity to our music,\u201d he says, \u201cand at every show I feel so energized and happy from the vibes of it.
