As part of the 50-year anniversary celebrations happening now, the college has launched the 50th Anniversary Student Creativity Contest.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">There are three categories\u2014<\/span><span lang=\"EN-US\">2D\/3D art, written word, and audio art\u2014in the contest, and the winner of each category will receive a $1,000 prize. The prize money comes from the college and the Camosun College Student Society.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Camosun executive director of communications and marketing Rodney Porter stresses that the contest is open to anyone who has been registered at Camosun since the winter 2019 semester, regardless of program. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThe creativity, for Camosun, emerges from across many different programs,\u201d says Porter. \u201cThe creativity in the trades program, for example, is immense.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_20500\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-20500\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/20210115_090705.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-20500 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/20210115_090705-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/20210115_090705-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/01\/20210115_090705.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-20500\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">A flag on Camosun&#8217;s Lansdowne campus announcing the college&#8217;s 50th anniversary (photo by Greg Pratt\/<em>Nexus<\/em>).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The college is deliberately trying to not be too prescriptive with contest guidelines, says Porter, so that students can focus on their own creativity. There is lots of freedom, regardless of if students are creating from home or if they want to do something outdoors. The theme to draw upon for the contest is \u201chonouring the past, inspiring the future.\u201d As far as what that means to him, Porter says that throughout the history of the college, giving access to education is key. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWe\u2019ve always taken great pride in breaking down obstacles and opening doors as a community,\u201d says Porter. \u201cWhatever incarnation of Camosun\u2014whether you\u2019re doing a transfer program, whether you\u2019re doing an upgrading program, or whether you\u2019re doing a post-degree diploma, it speaks to the passion and the commitment and the resilience. Students have been overcoming obstacles and boundaries for years and we\u2019ve been helping them. Now\u2019s no different.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Porter acknowledges that creativity can be a really important tool in helping students to find an outlet during hard times. And these are hard times, with maybe more to come, but whatever life looks like after COVID-19, it\u2019s important to be able to ask questions, he says.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cWhat have we learned?\u201d says Porter.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">That\u2019s one of the topics that could be tackled through the art students create for the contest, as well as making sure the art adheres to the college\u2019s Equity, Diversity and Inclusion Policy.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cThat was deliberately referenced in the criteria,\u201d says Porter. <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">Inclusion of students is important to the contest, and to the college.<\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">\u201cStudents have so many talents. We want a touch of every aspect of people\u2019s talent,\u201d says Porter. \u201cAnd that\u2019s why there are three [categories]. We want students\u2026 to consider how they can express their passion, their creativity.\u201d\u00a0 <\/span><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div>\n<p class=\"normal\"><span lang=\"EN-US\">The contest submission deadline is end of day on Friday, March 12; multiple submissions can be made for each category.
