What recent Oscar-winning film director Chlo\u00e9 Zhao does so well with her stunning Nomadland<\/em> is expertly combine the nomad\u2019s fascinating lifestyle, Frances McDormand\u2019s master-class \u00a0performance, a hard-working crew, and the film\u2019s timely messages about grief and loss, putting it all into one Academy Award-winning movie.<\/p>\n

But McDormand is what I liked best about Nomadland<\/em>; she is the reason to see the movie. In her third Academy Award-winning performance, McDormand fully embodies Fern, a woman who hasn\u2019t had it easy but by the film\u2019s closing credits learns how to make her tragedies help her become a better person. This is another great, fearless performance from McDormand, one that will stand the test of time while cementing her place as the 21st century Katharine Hepburn.<\/p>\n

Another reason this movie serves as one of the big stand-out films of 2020 is the unique way it was filmed. Instead of using professional actors for the scenes where Fern is interacting with the nomads, Zhao and her talented cast used true nomads who had never acted a day in their lives and asked them to play fictionized versions of themselves (Nomadland<\/em>\u2019s Empire is indeed a real place, located in Nevada). This filmmaking approach helped made the movie memorable and perhaps also helped catapult it to a Best Picture win at the Academy Awards (Zhao also took home the Best Director award for the movie).<\/p>\n

Nomadland<\/em> is an amazing, well-made film, and easily one of the best movies I\u2019ve seen in this long year.<\/p>\n
