{"id":21005,"date":"2021-05-06T09:00:26","date_gmt":"2021-05-06T16:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=21005"},"modified":"2021-05-05T09:22:45","modified_gmt":"2021-05-05T16:22:45","slug":"young-bc-musicians-support-mental-health-care-with-performance-stream","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2021\/05\/06\/young-bc-musicians-support-mental-health-care-with-performance-stream\/","title":{"rendered":"Young BC musicians support mental-health care with performance stream"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>In support of Youth Mental Health Day, the Greater Victoria Youth Orchestra (GVYO) is presenting a performance of Jordan Noble\u2019s <em>Apollo, <\/em>featuring over 350 students from across BC, united as the Apollo Initiative<em>. <\/em>The performance, happening tomorrow, is free, but donations are encouraged in an effort to raise funds to support youth facing mental-health challenges exacerbated by the COVID-19 pandemic. The show is produced with support from the BC Division of the Canadian Mental Health Association.<\/p>\n<p>GVYO violinist Rebecca Reader-Lee was raised surrounded by music; Reader-Lee, who is 19, has been playing since she was three years old.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a big part of my family,\u201d she says. \u201cI really wanted to do it because my sister was doing it, and I was just so amazed by music. With my mom being in the Victoria Chamber Orchestra I was really exposed to it from a young age and I really enjoyed it so much, I wanted to do it myself.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21006\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21006\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Apollo-rehearsals.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21006\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Apollo-rehearsals-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Apollo-rehearsals-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Apollo-rehearsals-272x204.jpg 272w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/05\/Apollo-rehearsals.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21006\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Students rehearsing for the Apollo Initiative performance (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Reader-Lee got involved in the Apollo Initiative because she believes in supporting mental-health care and enjoys the experience of creation and collaboration, especially in the throes of COVID-19 social isolation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe idea that we can all get together and do this good thing, even with the circumstances that we\u2019re all in right now, it was amazing,\u201d she says. \u201cJust being able to be with other people again, even for a short time, even for just this little project, was really meaningful.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>She says that performing can be scary, but it\u2019s possible to learn to channel that fear into creative output.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStage fright has always been a thing, and that\u2019s something everyone has to work through, but the more you get used to performing for people, it becomes pretty natural,\u201d she says. \u201cYou start to be able to turn that nervous or anxious energy into fuel for your performance, and you can use it to your advantage as opposed to letting it freeze you up.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While modern music with lyrics is valuable to culture, Reader-Lee feels that classical music allows a listener to create their own narrative and become emotionally involved in the material.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s something about classical music, especially instrumental music, where things aren\u2019t explicitly said, and there isn\u2019t any actual set story. There\u2019s a thing about it that gets me so excited where you kind of get to decide what the music is saying to people,\u201d she says. \u201cEven if it\u2019s not an actual thing happening, it\u2019s an emotion, just a feeling, and it gets people thinking in ways that maybe music with lyrics does not, because music with lyrics has a set meaning. I really appreciate both; they both have a really important role in the music world and how we express ourselves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reader-Lee says that while she doesn\u2019t mind playing alone, performing with a group creates a synergistic energy that\u2019s a joy to experience.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve done solo performances but I\u2019ve found that I really love to play with people; that\u2019s kind of my main passion,\u201d she says. \u201cI just love the social aspects; the collaboration means a lot to me and I feel like the more people you\u2019re playing with, every individual person is bringing what they have to the performance, and it just creates this magical thing where everyone\u2019s working together.
