One of the performers playing at what has been coined Virtual JazzFest is local trombonist, bassist, and producer Nick La Riviere. And while the show is virtual, that doesn\u2019t mean La Riviere isn\u2019t going full-steam ahead with all that jazz has to offer.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I were to go the classical route, then\u2026 my job would be to play notes exactly as they are on the page and make them sound absolutely perfect, exactly as they are, and I\u2019d be at the mercy of the composer,\u201d he says. \u201cIn jazz, there\u2019s more freedom to improvise.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s been over a year of learning to play live music a little differently, but La Riviere hopes the end of pandemic life is in sight\u2014he\u2019s booking some outdoor patio gigs for the summer, and regularly plays at Pagliacci\u2019s and the Bard and Banker\u2019s patio with two of his band members. The catch? It doesn\u2019t change the song that\u2019s playing.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But being able to play at full volume still can\u2019t quite be replicated, he says, because regardless of the instrument you\u2019re playing, the tone of it changes at a lower volume.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen you play it physically louder, there\u2019s just no room to replicate that,\u201d he says, \u00a0\u201cand there\u2019s also more room for dynamics when you\u2019re playing it louder.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Crescendos and other dynamic choices are limited when volume is limited, but La Riviere isn\u2019t complaining. He\u2019s looking forward to the days when live shows can be played in full again.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would rather be playing these quiet shows than not playing at all,\u201d he says. \u201cWe\u2019re still happy to have the opportunity.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Playing virtually, as La Riviere is for JazzFest, means that there is less going on around him: there are no people laughing, drinking, or having a good time. Instead, La Riviere thinks of the virtual shows as being more like recording in the studio.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou still have to put all the energy you have into it because it\u2019s going to be played back multiple times later,\u201d he says. \u201cAs a musician, you always want to be putting your best sound out there, but it\u2019s certainly a whole different thing when there\u2019s not the audience right in front of you.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Virtually JazzFest<br \/>\nFriday, June 25 to Sunday, July 4<br \/>\nBy donation<br \/>\n<a href=\"https:\/\/www.jazzvictoria.ca\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">jazzvictoria.ca<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Due to ongoing COVID-19 restrictions, the 38th edition of the TD Victoria International JazzFest will be held online next month.
