{"id":21146,"date":"2021-06-09T09:00:38","date_gmt":"2021-06-09T16:00:38","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=21146"},"modified":"2021-06-14T12:11:59","modified_gmt":"2021-06-14T19:11:59","slug":"camosun-chargers-look-ahead-to-promising-fall-semester","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2021\/06\/09\/camosun-chargers-look-ahead-to-promising-fall-semester\/","title":{"rendered":"Camosun Chargers look ahead to promising fall semester"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As case numbers of COVID-19 continue to go down and vaccination numbers continue to go up across the province, the Camosun Chargers are gearing up for what it hopes will be the return of spectator sports at Camosun in September.<\/p>\n<p>The Chargers\u2014who play at the Pacific Institute for Sport Excellence at Camosun\u2019s Interurban campus\u2014haven\u2019t played since March 2020. Under phase 4 of BC\u2019s restart plan, a \u201creturn to normal sport competitions with an updated COVID-19 Safety Plan in place\u201d could happen as early as September 7 at the direction of provincial health officer Bonnie Henry.<\/p>\n<p>Camosun director of student affairs Evan Hilchey, who is also currently Chargers acting athletics director, says the college is working with provincial guidelines and other safety primers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom there, we\u2019ll make a determination of when it\u2019s safe to play within our college facilities,\u201d he says. \u201cWe have been eagerly reviewing the Return to Campus Primer that was released, and the former return to campus guidelines, and have been working with occupational health and safety to make sure that we have all the appropriate assessments and risk-mitigation factors in place for a safe competition.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21151\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21151\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/49465001761_9697a1e75e_o.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-21151 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/49465001761_9697a1e75e_o-300x193.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"193\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/49465001761_9697a1e75e_o-300x193.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/06\/49465001761_9697a1e75e_o.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21151\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camosun student and Chargers women&#8217;s volleyball player Hannah May (photo by Kevin Light).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Hilchey says that student-athletes have enjoyed being able to practice\u2014which has been permitted through public health orders\u2014this year, but are looking forward to getting back to normal.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cVarsity sports play a really important part of community development,\u201d says Hilchey. \u201cHaving opportunities for students and student athletes to engage in sports and to compete with other schools creates a sense of camaraderie [and] community through opportunities for our community to come out and cheer on our Chargers team.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Chargers women\u2019s volleyball right side hitter\u2014and fourth-year general studies student\u2014Hannah May says the women\u2019s volleyball team has been practicing four to six times a week and that the team has \u201creally been breaking down every part of our game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe decided as a team we were going to do our best to improve in every aspect, so we showed up every day not knowing when we would actually be able to play again, but we all pushed each other\u2026 so that when we do get the chance to play again, hopefully this fall, we\u2019re going to be in the right spot that we need to be in to go for that national championship next year,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>May says that it\u2019s surreal that \u201cthere\u2019s a really good chance\u201d the team is going to have their season in September, with spectators.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt makes us never want to take for granted paying college sports again,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>An extra opportunity for a year of training put each individual athlete further ahead, says May. She really enjoyed the low-pressure aspect to training.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was no pressure of fighting for playing time, no pressure of, \u2018Oh, I have to get better,\u2019\u201d she says. \u201cWe were just able to fully have a growth mindset all season.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As case numbers of COVID-19 continue to go down and vaccination numbers continue to go up across the province, the Camosun Chargers are gearing up for what it hopes will be the return of spectator sports at Camosun in September.
