And the Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) are inviting all Camosun students to attend its upcoming Diwali event on Wednesday, November 3.<\/p>\n<p>The festival is celebrated mostly by Hindus, Sikhs, Jains, and some Buddhists, in particular Newar Buddhists. Diwali typically lasts five days and takes place during the Hindu lunisolar month Kartika, which is between mid-October and mid-November.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo what is the significance for any event the CCSS organizes?\u201d says CCSS external executive Puneet Kaur. \u201cTo make international students feel that they belong to this community and are taken care of.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21737\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21737\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/hand-g86782930e_1920.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21737\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/hand-g86782930e_1920-300x200.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"200\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/hand-g86782930e_1920-300x200.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/10\/hand-g86782930e_1920.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21737\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Camosun College Student Society is having a Diwali event on November 3 (photo by Gerd Altmann from Pixabay).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Kaur says that Camosun values international students, so organizing events like this is important to the CCSS.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s open to every Camosun student, and they can come together, network, make some friends,\u201d she says. \u201cThese kinds of events improve the bond between students, and it\u2019s a really good opportunity for them to connect.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaur says that because of<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0 <\/span>COVID, students have all been at home, so this is a great opportunity to meet students at campus while still following safety protocols. She says it can also be good for making contacts and meeting alumni.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe will have an opening ceremony, we will have a few performances by our students and then it will be followed up by a DJ party. It\u2019s for three hours, and we have some food boxes for students,\u201d she says. \u201cWe are looking forward to meeting students and seeing how they like the event. When we have these kinds of events we really get good engagement. That\u2019s the fun and interesting part for us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Kaur says that events like this one will improve the bond between local and international students as it will help local students will become more familiar with different cultures.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCCSS is organizing the Indian traditional festival to showcase what it is all about with authentic elements,&#8221; she says. &#8220;For that, we are starting with diwa lighting ceremony, added by performances and different Indian folk dances. We are also organizing a henna temporary tattoo event, so students can get some henna tattoos on their hands. We can answer any questions that they are curious about with respect to this festival. There will be all the information available.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The CCSS Diwali event runs from 5 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday, November 3 at Na\u2019tsa\u2019maht at the Lansdowne campus.
