{"id":21845,"date":"2021-12-01T09:00:31","date_gmt":"2021-12-01T17:00:31","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=21845"},"modified":"2021-12-01T13:40:57","modified_gmt":"2021-12-01T21:40:57","slug":"charles-parkinson-steps-back-from-coaching-camosun-chargers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2021\/12\/01\/charles-parkinson-steps-back-from-coaching-camosun-chargers\/","title":{"rendered":"Charles Parkinson steps back from coaching Camosun Chargers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Camosun Chargers men\u2019s volleyball head coach Charles Parkinson has announced that he is stepping back from coaching.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Parkinson\u2014who started with the Chargers in 2007 and is nicknamed the \u201cwinningest coach\u201d that Camosun has ever had\u2014says that although he\u2019s taking a break from coaching, he\u2019ll still be working at the college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m faculty here,\u201d says Parkinson. \u201cI am the program leader for the Sport Management degree program. That\u2019s my teaching responsibility, and although I\u2019m leaving the coaching position, I haven\u2019t retired from any teaching positions. I will still be around the college as my professional role as an instructor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parkinson has spent the last 14 years building a legacy of wins and memories.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_21846\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-21846\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Charles-Parkinson-Nexus.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-21846\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Charles-Parkinson-Nexus-300x187.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"187\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Charles-Parkinson-Nexus-300x187.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/11\/Charles-Parkinson-Nexus.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-21846\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camosun Chargers men\u2019s volleyball head coach Charles Parkinson is stepping down from coaching the team (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI remember once when we were playing in Charlottetown in PEI, the night we won, there was a blizzard, so we couldn\u2019t get out until the following Tuesday,\u201d he says. \u201cWe had an awful lot of time to celebrate that win. No staff could get to the hotel so we ended up just having the run of the hotel for three days. The worst thing was that it was a long weekend and I was supposed to come back because my wife and I were supposed to be going away on a getaway&#8230; I didn\u2019t get back until Tuesday&#8230; It was quite a blizzard, and quite a story. I think that was 2015. But it was still a great victory.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parkinson says that his greatest memories still exist in the coaching of the players and seeing their achievements grow.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the players that have gone through here and given so much, it\u2019s so awesome to get to coach these young guys who have so much energy and enthusiasm and positivity,\u201d he says. \u201cYou can\u2019t help but stay young and stay positive. You get to go the gym with guys who are really trying to be excellent, who have such a positive outlook on their own athletics and their future, and maybe they will be the leaders of tomorrow. If we get to teach them a few life lessons on the journey that they\u2019re on, it\u2019s just so rewarding to do that. I still stay in touch with a lot of them over the years and if they come to town and reach out to me, they\u2019ll come into a practice and meet the new guys we have. It\u2019s all part of the culture that we have here.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Camosun students Morgan Humphreys and Vitor Pereira have both played volleyball under Parkinson.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s been like a mentor and teacher to me, being part of the Sport Management Program,\u201d says Humphreys. \u201cHe will go out of his way to support an individual.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCharles\u2019 ability to communicate is unique,\u201d says Pereira. \u201cHe knows when to be tough, when to joke around, and when to listen to what athletes and assistant coaches have to say.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Parkinson is leaving coaching, but he says he\u2019ll be taking more than just the \u201cwinningest coach\u201d nickname with him as he moves ahead in life.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m going to be taking 14 years of memories with me that will sustain me for the rest of my life,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s not about the winning, it\u2019s really about the steps that we take in the journey\u2014that\u2019s where the fun lies. I always say to the guys, it\u2019s not about the destination, it\u2019s about the trip that takes you there. All the road trips we took, all the times your character\u2019s on trial, that is where the friendships are born.
