{"id":22304,"date":"2022-03-03T12:11:24","date_gmt":"2022-03-03T20:11:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=22304"},"modified":"2022-03-04T09:18:31","modified_gmt":"2022-03-04T17:18:31","slug":"camosun-college-student-society-womens-collective-to-hold-international-womens-day-event","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2022\/03\/03\/camosun-college-student-society-womens-collective-to-hold-international-womens-day-event\/","title":{"rendered":"Camosun College Student Society Women&#8217;s Collective to hold International Women\u2019s Day event"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>On Tuesday, March 8, the Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) Women&#8217;s Collective is hosting an informational event on both campuses in honour of International Women\u2019s Day.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re offering beverages, buttons, and educational pamphlets informing people about events that are happening with the Women\u2019s Collective and also just some info about [women&#8217;s rights],\u201d says CCSS women&#8217;s director Afaf Burrow. \u201cWe also have a sign-up sheet for people who are interested in volunteering with the Women\u2019s Collective.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22305\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22305\" style=\"width: 225px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Camosun-Womens-Collective.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22305 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Camosun-Womens-Collective-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Camosun-Womens-Collective-225x300.jpg 225w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/03\/Camosun-Womens-Collective.jpg 525w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22305\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The Camosun College Student Society Women&#8217;s Collective is holding an International Women&#8217;s Day event on Tuesday, March 8 (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Burrow says the goal of the event, and more broadly of the Women\u2019s Collective, is to spread awareness around women\u2019s struggles, and to facilitate informational discussions and advocacy for all women.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to spread awareness about what goes on around the world regarding women&#8217;s rights and what we can do as allies in our everyday lives to support women of all backgrounds, economic levels, and colours,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Burrow emphasizes the importance of encouraging women&#8217;s events and their surrounding discourse, specifically in a college setting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think it\u2019s very important, because women\u2019s education in the past has been severely limited, but with the rise of activism and feminist movements it\u2019s been more supported,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s just very important to continue that and to ensure that we can allow women to be heard on all platforms.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burrows says the Women\u2019s Collective has also been involved in other ongoing initiatives around campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPreviously we have done period-product campaigning, which is to support menstrual equality throughout all campuses,\u201d she says. \u201cSo we have some [products] available in Lansdowne close to the library area and we\u2019re hoping to spread it out more around the campus as well as at Interurban.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Whether or not a student attends the event on International Women\u2019s Day, Burrow encourages everyone to always be mindful of women\u2019s issues, and to support people who choose to speak up about them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI would say the most important thing is just acknowledging our implicit biases and doing more reading, more allyship, and more support,\u201d she says. \u201cBe mindful of what goes on and what we can do to help, offer a lending hand, and just do some reflection.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Burrow says the Women\u2019s Collective has plans to host events supporting women&#8217;s history throughout March, which is Women\u2019s History Month. She encourages anyone interested to reach out and volunteer with the collective.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have bi-weekly meetings\u2014due to COVID they\u2019re online through Zoom\u2014to discuss how we can help out around the school, and promote campaigning,\u201d she says. \u201cWe also work with the British Columbia Federation of Students to try to support students, and especially women of all backgrounds.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The International Women&#8217;s Day event will take place between 9 am and 12 pm on Tuesday, March 8. It will be in the Fisher Building at Lansdowne, and at the Liz Ashton Campus Centre building at Interurban.
