The play\u2014which, according to director Jacob Richmond, explores themes of loss and self-expression\u2014follows six teenagers who have an unfortunate experience on a familiar amusement park ride.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe play fellows six teenagers who have a tragic accident on a roller-coaster,\u201d says Richmond. \u201cThey find a fortune-telling machine&#8230; and this machine gives one of them the chance to come back to life.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The play\u2014which debuted here in Victoria in 2008\u2014takes a tragic event and adds some comedy to it, but also grapples with larger concepts.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22905\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22905\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Ride-The-Cyclone-BBRT-M.-Coulson-M.-Humeny-C.-Gulseth-Y.-DOshun-K.-MacMillan.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22905 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Ride-The-Cyclone-BBRT-M.-Coulson-M.-Humeny-C.-Gulseth-Y.-DOshun-K.-MacMillan-300x204.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"204\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Ride-The-Cyclone-BBRT-M.-Coulson-M.-Humeny-C.-Gulseth-Y.-DOshun-K.-MacMillan-300x204.png 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Ride-The-Cyclone-BBRT-M.-Coulson-M.-Humeny-C.-Gulseth-Y.-DOshun-K.-MacMillan-305x207.png 305w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Ride-The-Cyclone-BBRT-M.-Coulson-M.-Humeny-C.-Gulseth-Y.-DOshun-K.-MacMillan.png 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22905\" class=\"wp-caption-text\"><em>Ride The Cyclone<\/em> deals with tragedy and comedy, and amusement park rides (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWe get to know the characters through the hour-and-a-half length, and they all have a solo,\u201d says Richmond. \u201cThere are a few different styles of music&#8230; and it&#8217;s about examining what makes a life worth living and also coming to terms with the idea of loss.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richmond says that what he enjoyed most about making the play is all of the people he got to work with.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe best part of making the play is working with all of the wonderful people I have met over the years,\u201d he says. \u201cl have worked with quite a few people in Victoria&#8230; and then even into the States. Meeting a lot of great people in Chicago, New York, Atlanta, and Seattle, and just meeting a lot of great people all around and collaborating with all of them them during the making of this play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richmond says that he enjoys helping his actors find the characters they are trying to portray.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDirecting is fun&#8230; and the best part is helping an actor find their voice in the world,\u201d he says. \u201cJust working with them on honing in that voice and experiencing the joy of being surprised by that actor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Richmond says that the main thing he would like the audience to take away from <em>Ride the Cyclone<\/em> is a lifted heart and the feeling of fulfillment.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFirst off, I think it&#8217;s a really great summer play,\u201d he says. \u201cIt&#8217;s short and it&#8217;s a musical and it&#8217;s a lot of fun.
