{"id":22983,"date":"2022-09-06T09:00:06","date_gmt":"2022-09-06T16:00:06","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=22983"},"modified":"2022-08-29T12:04:57","modified_gmt":"2022-08-29T19:04:57","slug":"jeremy-dutcher-tackles-themes-of-indigenous-identity-and-connection-in-music","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2022\/09\/06\/jeremy-dutcher-tackles-themes-of-indigenous-identity-and-connection-in-music\/","title":{"rendered":"Jeremy Dutcher tackles themes of Indigenous identity and connection in music"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Toronto-based singer\/musician Jeremy Dutcher is coming to town this month, and he\u2019s bringing with him his music\u2019s themes of Indigenous identity, our relationship to our surrounding world, and our connection to each other.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBecause I sing in Wolastoq language, my Indigenous language, the themes are definitely exploring identity through language and also our relationship to man,\u201d says Dutcher. \u201cBecause a lot of the music I sing is based on traditional music, a lot of it talks about the natural world and our relationship to it, so a lot of the songs I sing are about the sacredness of water or our relationship to the trees or our connection to each other, and what\u2019s important is how we treat each other.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dutcher says that when he makes music it also makes him feel a sense of connection to his ancestors and those that taught him to make music.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_22984\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-22984\" style=\"width: 199px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Jeremy-Dutcher-CREDIT-Vanessa-Heins.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-22984 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Jeremy-Dutcher-CREDIT-Vanessa-Heins-199x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"199\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Jeremy-Dutcher-CREDIT-Vanessa-Heins-199x300.jpg 199w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Jeremy-Dutcher-CREDIT-Vanessa-Heins-400x600.jpg 400w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/08\/Jeremy-Dutcher-CREDIT-Vanessa-Heins.jpg 464w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 199px) 100vw, 199px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-22984\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Toronto musician Jeremy Dutcher takes on big themes in his music (photo by Vanessa Heins).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cWhen I make music, I feel like I am connected into spirituality and my ancestors,\u201d he says. \u201cSo, it\u2019s a very special thing to make music and it\u2019s the most beautiful gift in the world, and I have been so well guided in my life, I mean from teachers and people who have guided me to make music in this way.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dutcher says that making music is very personal for him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFor me, music is the air I breathe,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s everything to do with my life. It\u2019s my job and my deepest pleasure and something that I get to do with my friends&#8230; I have been making music since I was a very little kid, so it\u2019s been a big part of my life.
