It\u2019s here that his interest in music blossomed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere was a guitar on the boat, and not having any parents tell me what to do resulted in me sailing around and teaching myself to play guitar with most of my time,\u201d says Eyerley.<\/p>\n<p>In 1994, when Eyerley was 16, he was exposed the punk\/ska\/reggae band Sublime, and their mix of styles would help define his own style as a musician.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSublime weren\u2019t just group of white guys trying to play Bob Marley reggae,\u201d he says. \u201cTheir music defines a rebellion.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2445\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2445\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_83601.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2445\" title=\"IMG_8360\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_83601-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_83601-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_83601-180x119.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/02\/IMG_83601.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2445\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Graham Eyerley of Brave New Waves and his trusty guitar (Marielle Moodley\/Nexus).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Given Brand New Waves\u2019 affection towards Sublime, they are a fitting band to have headline the upcoming Tribute to Sublime Island Style concert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur music, as well as Sublime\u2019s, has a dirty, sandy, West Coast waves, reggae sound to it which embodies the surfer\/skateboarder party lifestyle,\u201d says Eyerley. \u201cIt\u2019s a lifestyle I know all about because I grew up on waves.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While defining his style, Eyerley started attending open mics and jamming with other music types until he met Adrien Dube and James Angel. He meshed with their style and eventually they formed Brave New Waves.<\/p>\n<p>The name of the band came from the CBC radio show of the same name, which featured fresh underground music of different genres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs soon as the radio show stopped in the early 2000s I sent an email to the host saying I wanted to name my band Brave New Waves and she thought it was a cool idea,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n<p>At first, the band just wrote about typical song topics like partying, women, even surfing, but they have gotten more political with age.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNow our writing has progressed more into the imbalances of the world scale,\u201d he says, \u201cfocusing on environmental and social action, as well as things that we generally don\u2019t agree with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Brave New Waves has brought along lots of great life experiences for these guys, doing various tours throughout Western Canada, playing lots of festivals, and being on Victoria Ska Fest\u2019s bill for the past four years.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur most epic stage experience was at a gig last summer on Hornby Island with about 450 people in the audience,\u201d he recounts. \u201cIt was a full moon that night, so we got all 450 people to howl at the moon with us.
