Lukewarm off the presses! The deluxe reissue of Brooklyn-based industrial punk group GLDN\u2019s First Blood<\/i> EP is the musical definition of a mixed bag.<\/p>\n

Industrial punk can get a bad rep for maxing out intensity at all times, often to a song\u2019s detriment. It\u2019s a stereotype of the genre, one that GLDN has a coin-toss chance of proving or disproving.<\/p>\n

Some tracks here are dynamic and rhythmically unique, with a strong structure (\u201cGravedigger,\u201d \u201cSuicide Machine,\u201d \u201cHarmful if Swallowed\u201d), while others feel dime a dozen, repetitive, and frustratingly one note (the title track, \u201cRipe,\u201d \u201cParasite\u201d), although it\u2019s worth noting that every track is well mixed.<\/p>\n

The press materials accompanying this describe the EP as \u201ccritically divisive,\u201d which suggests you\u2019ll love it or hate it, but I found such a lack of cohesion to First Blood<\/i> that it didn\u2019t make me feel that strongly about it, and it didn\u2019t feel like a solid collection of material.<\/p>\n

Ultimately, there are some tracks worth checking out, but I think GLDN\u2019s golden hour is yet to come.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
