Brooklyn-based Americana artist Hallie Spoor\u2019s latest release, the Heart Like Thunder<\/i> EP, provides an insightful lens into the folk genre. Spoor\u2014who was raised in Colorado\u2014shows the thematic context of folk\u2019s rural roots through the connectivity of her storytelling. The EP offers a developing new voice to the folk landscape.\u00a0 \u00a0 \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Although Spoor\u2019s sound could be criticized as hokey and contrived, borrowing a little too much from Joni Mitchell, I feel her artistic voice remains powerful and relevant. In the short seven-track EP format, she hits all the right notes regarding thematic conventions of folk music.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

She depicts a generational aspect of the genre on tracks like \u201cDiamond Ring,\u201d refers to a hard lifestyle on \u201cGoodbye,\u201d and shows a fundamental connection to place on \u201cShenandoah.\u201d<\/p>\n
