The event, which celebrates instructional excellence, happens in April; students are encouraged to nominate instructors who have excelled in promoting student success.<\/p>\n<p>Students from the Lansdowne and Interurban campuses recognized 27 teachers in the event\u2019s first year and 28 in its next.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think students appreciate having their voice heard and a chance to celebrate and acknowledge teachers that they have appreciated,\u201d says Camosun Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning education developer Martha McAlister. \u201cReally, our goal is to really hear the student voice.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_25013\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-25013\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Teacher-recognition-photo-2023-scaled.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-25013 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Teacher-recognition-photo-2023-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Teacher-recognition-photo-2023-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Teacher-recognition-photo-2023-700x525.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Teacher-recognition-photo-2023-768x576.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Teacher-recognition-photo-2023-1536x1152.jpg 1536w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Teacher-recognition-photo-2023-2048x1536.jpg 2048w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/01\/Teacher-recognition-photo-2023-272x204.jpg 272w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-25013\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Camosun instructors who were recognized at last year\u2019s Teacher Recognition Awards event (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>During the first round of nominations in 2022, the organizers were unsure of what the student reception of the event would be, but after seeing the reaction they knew it was a success.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was such a popular activity that we decided to make it an annual thing,\u201d says McAlister.<\/p>\n<p>Camosun\u2019s Teaching and Learning Council (CTLC), who hold the event, adjusted its nomination guidelines from their first year to better reflect the student response and make it easier for those to engage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re trying to make it really no barriers for students to be able to participate,\u201d says McAlister.<\/p>\n<p>McAlister says that these awards aren\u2019t only valuable for students\u2014instructors have also been very responsive.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe words that the students submit get shared directly with the instructor,\u201d she says. \u201cAnd they have sometimes felt moved to tears. They\u2019re extremely touched that students speak out.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>McAlister believes that this opportunity helps promote an effective way to support useful progression and nurture a positive learning environment at Camosun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really boosts morale for instructors a lot,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s a public event&#8230; They\u2019re getting lifted up and acknowledged by the whole college.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The awards are non-competitive, so all instructors who are nominated and meet the nomination criteria get recognized.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the more people that get nominated,\u201d says McAlister, \u201cthe better.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Instructors were recognized in the event\u2019s first and second years for showing tangible support efforts\u2014such as accessible learning methods\u2014and, especially, high levels of compassion and respect for students.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we\u2019re seeing in the responses from the students is a real recognition of teachers who have gone above and beyond and really treated them as human beings and reached out and formed a really caring relationship,\u201d says McAlister. \u201cWe hear the word \u2018caring\u2019 a lot, and \u2018supportive,\u2019 and those are the words that really mean something.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>CTLC will be sending out an online registration form to all Camosun students with instructions on how to nominate instructors. The survey requests the student\u2019s basic information, such as name and contact information, as well as the instructor they choose to nominate and the class the student participated in.
