{"id":25499,"date":"2024-06-05T09:00:09","date_gmt":"2024-06-05T16:00:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/?p=25499"},"modified":"2024-06-21T09:58:07","modified_gmt":"2024-06-21T16:58:07","slug":"listen-and-learn-dayglo-abortions-member-looks-back-on-controversy-at-camosun","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2024\/06\/05\/listen-and-learn-dayglo-abortions-member-looks-back-on-controversy-at-camosun\/","title":{"rendered":"<em>Listen and Learn<\/em>: Dayglo Abortions member looks back on controversy at Camosun"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Reminding everyone that they\u2019re still alive, local punks Dayglo Abortions kicked off their cross-Canada Not Dead Yet tour on Friday, May 17 at Phoenix Bar &amp; Grill.<\/p>\n<p>The Dayglos (\u201cA Canadian punk band that uses satire and sarcasm as a weapon,\u201d according to their Facebook page; \u201cInsolence vs. intolerance since 1980.\u201d) have a reputation for controversy that they\u2019ve been spreading for 10 full-length albums. The original line-up, Murray \u201cCretin\u201d Acton on guitar and vocals, Jesus Bonehead on drums, and Trevor \u201cSpud\u201d Hagen on bass\u2014all juvenile delinquents in their own rights\u2014started a band to keep themselves out of trouble.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all decided we had to find something constructive to do with our time or we were all going to end up in jail,\u201d says Acton. \u201cSo, we started jamming and stuff&#8230; We had this band called The Sick Fucks for maybe a year and a half, two years there in the late \u201970s and then started the Dayglos in 1980.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The name \u201cDayglo Abortions\u201d is derived from a combination of the most controversial topic of the late \u201970s and a prize The Sick Fucks won at a battle of the bands (\u201cA bunch of spray paint,\u201d says Acton). There\u2019s only one catch, you know, I don\u2019t want it to sell in stores. I don\u2019t want to make a record that they can even put in a store.\u2019 Wow&#8230; I\u2019m your man. So, it was actually a conspiracy to manufacture obscene music, which is funny because that\u2019s what they tried to charge us with.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The charge in question was related to the band\u2019s third album, 1988\u2019s <i>Here Today, Guano Tomorrow<\/i>. The band was charged with obscene material (the first time in Canada\u2019s history a band faced this charge) but were cleared of charges and won the case in a 1990 Supreme Court trial. But the trials and tribulations the Dayglos have gone through didn\u2019t start or end there.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Acton was a Camosun Electronics student in the band\u2019s early days, and their material wasn\u2019t met with open arms on campus.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOut at the Interurban campus there&#8230; Yeah, that was weird,\u201d says Acton. \u201cWhen the Dayglos album first came out I was going to Camosun College, and I got attacked by a bunch of militant feminists and their effeminate husbands. It\u2019s pretty funny&#8230; They go, \u2018There he is!\u2019 They yelled at their husbands, \u2018Go get him!\u2019 I had to plow through them with my knapsack full of books and bonk a couple of them over and stuff. It was kind of embarrassing, actually.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dayglo Abortions have been the centre of protests, a Supreme Court of Canada case, and played shows that could better be described as riots yet are still going strong decades later. So, what\u2019s the secret to the longevity?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s fun. It\u2019s something that is real,\u201d says Acton. \u201cThe guys that I play with are&#8230; they\u2019re my best friends. [Drummer] Blind Marc and [guitarist] Matt [Fiorito] are literally my best friends. So, we got something that we do. We don\u2019t just sit around and do nothing; we\u2019re constructive. We have fun. Oh, and wreck people\u2019s weekends for them and stuff like that.
