{"id":2616,"date":"2012-03-07T11:19:48","date_gmt":"2012-03-07T19:19:48","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=2616"},"modified":"2012-03-12T09:32:46","modified_gmt":"2012-03-12T16:32:46","slug":"show-goes-down-the-rabbit-hole","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2012\/03\/07\/show-goes-down-the-rabbit-hole\/","title":{"rendered":"Show goes down the rabbit hole"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The death of a child, the earth-shattering event that the play <em>Rabbit Hole<\/em> is centered around, is like a deep cut to the soul: it changes everything life could have been and keeps thoughts and dreams tethered underground.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_2617\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-2617\" style=\"width: 214px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Rabbit-Hole-1-credit-david-lowes.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-2617\" title=\"'Rabbit Hole' 1 credit david lowes\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Rabbit-Hole-1-credit-david-lowes-214x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"214\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Rabbit-Hole-1-credit-david-lowes-214x300.jpg 214w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Rabbit-Hole-1-credit-david-lowes-300x420.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Rabbit-Hole-1-credit-david-lowes-180x252.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/03\/Rabbit-Hole-1-credit-david-lowes.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 214px) 100vw, 214px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-2617\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Rabbit Hole was a challenge to create but was worth it (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But Sylvia Rhodes, director of Langham Court Theatre\u2019s production of the bittersweet Pulitzer Prize-winning play, is concerned that focusing too much on the play\u2019s heart-wrenching subject matter might make some live theatre patrons pass on some of the best writing of the last decade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe play\u2019s about every parent\u2019s nightmare,\u201d says Rhodes, \u201cwhich sounds like a real downer, but the play never gets morbid; it deals with this tragic situation in a very honest and realistic way, but it deals with it with a lot of humor.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The play, written by David Lindsay-Abaire and first mounted in 2005, was adapted into a film starring Nicole Kidman directed by John Cameron Mitchell last year, but it lost a lot in translation on the silver screen.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI did go to see the movie, and I was very disappointed because it\u2019s nowhere near as interesting as the play,\u201d says Rhodes. \u201cThis play is far better than the movie.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rhodes was fortunate enough to see a production of <em>Rabbit Hole<\/em> four years ago and instantly fell in love with the story. After the show, she liked it so much that she presented it to her production company. Troubles with scheduling have led to delay after delay, but her dream has finally come true this season.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we choose a season,\u201d says Rhodes, \u201cwe have to choose a balance of comedies, dramas&#8230; this, of course, is a sad play, and we don\u2019t want more than one sad play in the season. It\u2019s taken three years to get it on, so I was very happy to be offered the chance of directing it because it is such a splendid play.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Even with the setbacks, Rhodes is still just as excited and proud to present such a powerful play as when she started working on it so many years ago.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got the ups and downs, which is what a well-written play should have.
