Sovereign Ace has been nothing short of an incredible creator and sharer of any fantasy realm that they can dream up.<\/p>\n<p>From fan of drag to performing for two years, they have presented Black excellence from Nanaimo to Victoria. Celebrating gender fluidity and freedom has become a day-to-day expression for them.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt has allowed me to explore my gender, sexuality, and presentation more,\u201d says Ace. \u201cI will usually wear my fits in my life [that day].\u201d<\/p>\n<p>What can you expect when you see Ace performing? Their love of cosplay has been one of the consistent things that make this performer so unique on stage.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI like to just play around with props\u2026 and incorporate weird things into performances,\u201d they say.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>With beautiful makeup, a stunning wardrobe, and a hint of nerd, this is a performer you will not forget.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy inspo is honestly just being a fantasy character or some cool background character that you just meet once but you really want to interact with more,\u201d they say.<\/p>\n<p>Before-show rituals are usually based around performers giving themselves time and space to feel more in tune; Ace likes to lend a helping hand to those around them.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26607\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26607\" style=\"width: 241px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image0.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26607\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image0-241x300.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"241\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image0-241x300.jpeg 241w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image0-561x700.jpeg 561w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image0-768x958.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/02\/image0.jpeg 1179w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 241px) 100vw, 241px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26607\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Sovereign Ace gets inspiration from fantasy characters for their drag (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI get fidgets, gummies, and mangos for the rest of the people I am performing with&#8230; [Being in shows] can be cup filling but also can be tiring sometimes,\u201d they say. \u201cI like meeting so many new and wonderful faces.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>If you ever have the chance to interact with Ace at a show, you will leave feeling enlightened, uplifted, and seen. They\u2019ve been a shining light with the support of the drag community, and make everyone they meet feel welcome. It doesn\u2019t matter if you\u2019ve been doing drag for years or are new.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEvery spotlight [debut performance] and first timers are always my favourite,\u201d they say, \u201cand I can\u2019t pick just one as I love seeing them put themselves out there and try their best and see new talent.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>While being in Nanaimo with a smaller drag scene has presented challenges, the reach of love and kindness has not been withheld. They have great hopes for diversity in the future of drag.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[I] would love to see some more diverse performers in Nanaimo,\u201d they say, \u201clike some more BIPOC performers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Ace is hopeful for the changes that can come out of sharing our stories, backgrounds, and views for others. The power of drag can represent so much and be a personal journey for most.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cA lot of the time, masculine-presenting Black individuals and female-presenting individuals are often seen as oversexualized\u2026 I like to just hopefully bring a fun vibe,\u201d they say.<\/p>\n<p>As for a goal they wish they could accomplish tomorrow, Ace\u2019s wish is simple.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cJust to make someone smile, and eat some chocolates.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>You can catch Sovereign Ace in Nanaimo at the show that started it all, <i>They\/Them\/Theirs<\/i>, every third week at The Vault Caf\u00e9, as well as pop-up appearances in Victoria at Moon Under Water Pub and Caf\u00e9 Runway at Caf\u00e9 Fantastico on Quadra Street, with many more to come.
