{"id":26762,"date":"2025-04-02T09:01:22","date_gmt":"2025-04-02T16:01:22","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/?p=26762"},"modified":"2025-04-02T11:31:31","modified_gmt":"2025-04-02T18:31:31","slug":"students-showcase-work-at-camosun-comic-arts-festival","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2025\/04\/02\/students-showcase-work-at-camosun-comic-arts-festival\/","title":{"rendered":"Students showcase work at Camosun Comic Arts Festival"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Camosun Comics &amp; Graphic Novels students will be showcasing their work at this year\u2019s Camosun Comic Arts Festival (CCAF).<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Students who are part of the program will show the comics they\u2019ve been working on throughout the year at the CCAF. The event takes place this year from 2 pm to 7 pm on Thursday, April 17 in the Wilna Thomas Building\u2019s Sherri Bell Hall, located at the college\u2019s Lansdowne campus.<\/p>\n<p>Miles \u201cMar\u201d Roever is one of these student artists; they\u2019re excited to show their digital art comic, among other pieces.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m doing a 30-page digital art comic&#8230; called <i>X Academy<\/i>,\u201d Roever says. \u201cIt\u2019s a fantasy thriller series about these students at two rival schools who are basically living with the consequences of this 3,000-year-old war, and they\u2019re just kind of learning how to get along again. [I\u2019ll also be showing] an art book of the traditional art that I\u2019ve done in our drawing classes this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_26764\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26764\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SneakPeekPanel.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-26764\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SneakPeekPanel-300x192.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"192\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SneakPeekPanel-300x192.png 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SneakPeekPanel-700x449.png 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SneakPeekPanel-768x493.png 768w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SneakPeekPanel-1536x985.png 1536w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2025\/03\/SneakPeekPanel-2048x1314.png 2048w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-26764\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Some of Miles \u201cMar\u201d Roever\u2019s art that will be on display at the event.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Previously working as a theatre artist, Roever enrolled at Camosun to learn about making comics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI wanted to take some time to train and do comics because what I really want to do is publish my own independent work,\u201d says Roever. \u201cI\u2019ve just been here the past year, learning everything I can about digital art and technique, working on light drawing, and everything.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Roever grew up reading comics, a key reason they\u2019ve chosen to pursue this medium.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI mostly grew up with, honestly, newspaper comics. I grew up reading all of the <i>Calvin and Hobbes<\/i> and <i>Baby Blues<\/i>,\u201d says Roever. \u201cFor some reason, I was a child reading comics about parenthood, and I thought that was so cool. But that was the stuff that I was reading as a kid. And then I grew up and I got into shows like <i>Gravity Falls<\/i>, that kind of stuff. So that\u2019s probably my heaviest influence.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apart from showcasing their comic book and skills, Roever is excited to finally be able to relax and enjoy the work of their peers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m honestly really excited to see everyone else\u2019s work,\u201d Roever says. \u201cI just think it\u2019s so cool that we all get to do this together and I get to, you know, share my art and then get to see theirs in return.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Along with Roever, student Declan Reilly will be showing his comics at the event. He consumes the medium in a much different way: by reading manga and superhero comics.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy dad loves comic books, and I\u2019ve always had comic books around me my entire life,\u201d he says. \u201cAnd I read all sorts of other comics, like manga\u2014it does not just have to be superheroes&#8230; I\u2019m inspired by a lot of Japanese content and stuff like <i>Invincible<\/i>, which I really like. A lot of <i>Daredevil<\/i> comics are really cool to me. I like grittier, real-life takes on what superpowers would look like in the real world. [The] superhero\u2019s name is Portal because he can teleport.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Apart from working on his comic, Reilly says it\u2019s been inspiring to be in a room full of people with a similar passion to his.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s really awesome to be in a space filled with creative [minds],\u201d he says. \u201cYou feel really focused during this course just on improving because there are so many people doing the same thing as you that you\u2019re just getting inspiration from.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Reilly is grateful that this program helped kickstart his comic-creating journey. He says that if there\u2019s something he wants people to take away from his art it\u2019s that it doesn\u2019t matter which stage of their life they\u2019re in\u2014they should get their dream started.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hope when people see my art, they are able to take away that, you know, I\u2019m not a professional artist. But I\u2019m proud of myself that I tried my best,\u201d he says. \u201cI hope other people can kind of take that and use it as inspiration to just start whatever they\u2019re thinking about. Maybe they\u2019re scared to start because they\u2019re worried that it won\u2019t be what they can picture in their head.
