The team has a renewed focus as players get back into a rhythm and prepare with focused minds for what\u2019s ahead.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Guard and shooter Elli Cailliau\u2014originally from Sherwood Park, Alberta\u2014is a Kinesiology student at Camosun and has been with the women\u2019s basketball team for five years. She\u2019s entering her final season and hopes to leave a lasting impact on the team through her passion and determination, wanting to inspire others who might be new on the court, especially those new to college basketball.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI just want to leave it all in the court,\u201d says Cailliau. \u201cI want to do the best we can. With new players joining the roster, the Chargers are focusing on building chemistry in and out of the court to solidify their plays.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m really excited about the new season,\u201d she says. \u201cWe have a very new team compared to last year, and the league has changed a lot, so it\u2019ll be really exciting to see where we fall.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Practices have been intense for players, she says, as their strategy this year emphasizes speed, communication, and adaptability to make up for their size as it compares to other teams.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey\u2019re learning fast,\u201d says Cailliau. \u201cFrom them, the main thing we want to see is effort, and they\u2019re all in. Every practice, every game.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cailliau says that much of the team\u2019s renewed sense of confidence comes from coach John Dedrick, now in his second year with the program. She says that his leadership has reshaped the program\u2019s focus and motivates players to give their best in every practice. She says that under Dedrick\u2019s guidance, the team has built a culture of encouragement and support, where every player can rely on each other and improve together.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe\u2019s very solid,\u201d she says. \u201cThe girls really respect him, and, in only two years, he\u2019s done a really good job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For Cailliau, success this year means progressive growth. After a complicated season last year, Cailliau says that it\u2019s less about the score but rather about swift overall progress, building toward unity, strength, and prideful representation of the college.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cLast season we had a lot of injuries, and we weren\u2019t winning many games,\u201d she says. \u201cIt was hard on us mentally and physically. As long as we keep improving each weekend, we\u2019ll find our path to success.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Cailliau hopes that fans come to support the team and experience the excitement of basketball.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFans can expect good competition,\u201d she says. \u201cWe\u2019ll be putting up a fight, we\u2019ll be scoring, we\u2019ll be passing, we\u2019ll be working together.
