{"id":27922,"date":"2026-03-04T09:00:58","date_gmt":"2026-03-04T17:00:58","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/?p=27922"},"modified":"2026-02-26T10:11:30","modified_gmt":"2026-02-26T18:11:30","slug":"camosun-college-student-society-says-thanks-but-no-thanks-with-donations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2026\/03\/04\/camosun-college-student-society-says-thanks-but-no-thanks-with-donations\/","title":{"rendered":"Camosun College Student Society says Thanks but No Thanks with donations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Even if you don\u2019t have a long list of jilted lovers like fallen leaves trailing in your wake, showering you with gifts to try to win you back, there\u2019s a high likelihood that at some point along your journey you\u2019ve received a gift for Valentine\u2019s Day that for whatever reason you just no longer want to hold onto. Maybe it came from some swaggering lothario that you\u2019d rather not be reminded of every time it catches your eye, or maybe it\u2019s just not really your style. Maybe, like many of us, you just need to clean out your closet.<\/p>\n<p>It was with this in mind that Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) women\u2019s director Madison Huynh came up with their recent donation-collecting event, Thanks but No Thanks, which took place on Tuesday, February 10 at Interurban and Thursday, February 12 at Lansdowne.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt started as a joke, actually. We were like, \u2018Oh, wouldn\u2019t it be funny, just a bunch of people bring stuff and we actually burn it all?\u201d Huynh says with a laugh. \u201cBut, of course, we can\u2019t set fire to things on campus.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_27923\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-27923\" style=\"width: 213px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_20260220_083213_820.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-27923\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_20260220_083213_820-213x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"213\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_20260220_083213_820-213x300.jpg 213w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_20260220_083213_820-498x700.jpg 498w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_20260220_083213_820-768x1080.jpg 768w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_20260220_083213_820-1092x1536.jpg 1092w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2026\/02\/IMG_20260220_083213_820.jpg 1180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 213px) 100vw, 213px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-27923\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Women in Need representative Dani Puli (left) and Camosun College Student Society women\u2019s director Madison Huynh (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>But now the wheels had begun to turn, and an idea was beginning to take shape.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, we were like, \u2018What else can we do?\u2019\u201d says Huynh. \u201cAnd then it\u2019s just like, \u2018We can give back to the community and turn something that\u2019s bad into something good.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With a two-part plan now well underway, it was time to jump the first hurdle: getting donations for the Camosun Child Care Centres and Women in Need (WIN) lined up.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo the event entails donating your existing thing, or, you know, unwanted gift and then we get all together, make sure it\u2019s in good condition, and then we\u2019re giving it, some to WIN, and some to the daycare centre on campus,\u201d says Huynh.<\/p>\n<p>Huynh says that among the usual suspects of plush stuffed animals and small trinkets, there were a few surprises to be ferreted out among the crops of donations.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had one teacher bring in so much needed supplies, like shampoo, conditioner, toothbrushes, everything. They were like, \u2018Please give this to the people that need it.\u2019 I think the craziest thing we got was a handful of jewelry.
