{"id":3181,"date":"2012-04-16T09:00:26","date_gmt":"2012-04-16T16:00:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=3181"},"modified":"2012-04-17T09:27:56","modified_gmt":"2012-04-17T16:27:56","slug":"tight-race-at-interurban-in-student-society-elections","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2012\/04\/16\/tight-race-at-interurban-in-student-society-elections\/","title":{"rendered":"Tight race at Interurban in student society elections"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The latest Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) elections, held April 3-5, showed how important single votes can be, with the Interurban executive position being decided by a mere 12 votes.<\/p>\n<p>Jordan Sandwith, a first-year computer systems technician student, narrowly defeated Deana Srdic, a third-year business administration marketing communications student.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOne vote, 12 votes\u2014a win is a win in my eyes,\u201d says Srdic, who was outside Canada for the election.<\/p>\n<p>Less than 10 percent of students enrolled at Camosun participated in this year\u2019s CCSS elections, which also saw the election of a number of other positions for both campuses.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_3207\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3207\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/6306132745_ef51f4a395_z.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3207\" title=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/6306132745_ef51f4a395_z-300x167.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"167\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/6306132745_ef51f4a395_z-300x167.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/6306132745_ef51f4a395_z-180x100.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/04\/6306132745_ef51f4a395_z.jpg 590w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-3207\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Image by League of Women Voters of California<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Srdic says she realizes just how busy students can be. Between balancing class schedules, homework, and socializing, it can be a challenge for students to find time to vote, but she says it does matter that they do.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s incredibly important that students do take every opportunity to vote,\u201d she says. \u201cThe student society makes decisions that directly impact Camosun students. Voting for an elected board is essential.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Sandwith says that while voter turnout was poor, it was still higher than it was last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn the last election there were less than 150 people who voted at Interurban,\u201d says Sandwith. \u201cI think we doubled that this year.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Such a tight election actually generated more excitement and anticipation for Sandwith.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt was a close race,\u201d says Sandwith. \u201cI think there were other positions that came very close, so it was a very close race this year.
