But those outside the short filmmaking circle (like, hello, 99 percent of us) might not realize that our little festival that could has made quite a name for itself, especially amongst participating filmmakers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAntimatter is the most important festival in western Canada for exposing and celebrating experimental media,\u201d says participating filmmaker Alex MacKenzie, who is screening <em>Intertidal<\/em>, a 60-minute performance-based piece about BC coastal tides shot on Vancouver Island.<\/p>\n<p>It\u2019s this kind of praise that festival director Todd Eacrett didn\u2019t quite expect when he started Antimatter a decade and a half ago. In fact, Eacrett didn\u2019t expect the festival to even make it to the 15-year mark.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019ve managed to grow it into an event with a really good reputation within the international media arts community,\u201d says Eacrett. \u201cI feel quite proud of the work we do with the festival, and it\u2019s especially nice to hear it from the artists.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With a wide variety of short films screening over the eight-day festival, there really is, as they say, something for everyone: assuming those everyones are fans of off-the-wall short film and creative artistic expression (read: expect some major WTFs over the course of the fest).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_4405\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-4405\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/YN8cRWtLDW_a27Lm867xfWkET-06Rw1pL_CjcQZZYCA.jpeg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-4405\" title=\"YN8cRWtLDW_a27Lm867xfWkET-06Rw1pL_CjcQZZYCA\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/YN8cRWtLDW_a27Lm867xfWkET-06Rw1pL_CjcQZZYCA-300x220.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"220\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/YN8cRWtLDW_a27Lm867xfWkET-06Rw1pL_CjcQZZYCA-300x220.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/YN8cRWtLDW_a27Lm867xfWkET-06Rw1pL_CjcQZZYCA-180x132.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/YN8cRWtLDW_a27Lm867xfWkET-06Rw1pL_CjcQZZYCA.jpeg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-4405\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Night Hunter is one of many short films being screened at this year&#39;s Antimatter film fest (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Christina Battle, an Edmonton-born filmmaker who is screening two films in this year\u2019s festival, chose to contribute to Antimatter because she\u2019d been following it for a few years and really appreciates the care that\u2019s put into the programming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s a rare treat to show short works within carefully constructed programs alongside other works that complement one another and, in the end, generate a greater conversation,\u201d says Battle.<\/p>\n<p>And although no form of art can truly escape the confines of modern society, the type of films screened at Antimatter might be the closest we\u2019ll ever come to purity in art. \u201cBut nothing is pure,\u201d says MacKenzie, \u201cand that is a good thing.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>As for this year\u2019s highlights, Eacrett says he\u2019s looking forward to all of the programming, including a special screening of home movies in correlation with Home Movie Day. \u201cThere\u2019s so much good work in this year\u2019s program,\u201d he says. \u201cI\u2019ve seen them all already, but it will be even better to see them again on a big screen in a room full of people.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Antimatter Film Festival<br \/>\nOctober 12-20, $5-8 suggested donation<br \/>\nVic Theatre (808 Douglas) and Deluge Art (636 Yates)<br \/>\nantimatter.ws<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For 15 years, Victoria\u2019s Antimatter Film Festival has screened the weirdest and most eclectic collection of short films.
