Communities are looking for ways to cope and recover, and the people of Detroit have turned to urban farming.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI think people just got fed up,\u201d says Mark MacInnis, director of <em>Urban Roots,<\/em> a documentary on urban-agriculture initiatives in Detroit. \u201cWith the economy going the way it is and was, it made people think about how to cut corners and how to bring down food costs. So they turned to farming and growing vegetables and starting simple.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_604\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-604\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/oldgrocerystore_1-CREDIT-URBAN-ROOTS-FILM.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-604\" title=\"oldgrocerystore_1 CREDIT URBAN ROOTS FILM\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/oldgrocerystore_1-CREDIT-URBAN-ROOTS-FILM-300x168.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"168\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/oldgrocerystore_1-CREDIT-URBAN-ROOTS-FILM-300x168.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/oldgrocerystore_1-CREDIT-URBAN-ROOTS-FILM-700x393.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/oldgrocerystore_1-CREDIT-URBAN-ROOTS-FILM.jpg 1920w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-604\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">The fate of food co-ops is tackled in the documentary film Urban Roots (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>The film centers around individuals and non-profits in Detroit who practice urban farming, some who have been doing it for 20 years, and on \u201chow community comes together to rebuild a city when everyone else has left,\u201d says MacInnis.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cDetroit was built for two million people, and now there are only 700,000 still living there,\u201d he explains, \u201cand while there are a lot of places to cover, there\u2019s definitely a positive feeling in the air.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Paul Wurtz is one community member contributing to this renewed optimism that\u2019s taking over Detroit. \u201cPaul took out an entire asphalt parking lot and turned it into a farm,\u201d says MacInnis, \u201cnot a garden, a full-on farm with a horse, chickens, and bunnies. And he\u2019s doing it because he loves it and he\u2019s passionate about it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Through making the film, the creators were inspired to form the <em>Urban Roots<\/em> foundation, with some of the profits from DVD sales going towards putting farms in schools across North America.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have two pilot schools right now; one in LA and one in Detroit,\u201d says MacInnis. \u201cWith <em>Urban Roots<\/em> we wanted to incorporate a whole action campaign around it so that when you\u2019re done watching the film, and if you\u2019re inspired by the film, there\u2019s information and a lot of outreach opportunities through us.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>MacInnis truly believes these types of initiatives are positive for the city. \u201cWhen someone sees these farms, they start talking about their history and farming, and their family and grandparents and what they used to grow,\u201d he says. \u201cIt\u2019s amazing how you learn from different people, and it breaks all these racial and gender barriers.\u201d<\/p>\n<p><em>Urban Roots<\/em><br \/>\n7pm, Wednesday, October 12<br \/>\nVictoria Event Centre<br \/>\n$10-20<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/urbanrootsamerica.com\" target=\"_blank\">urbanrootsamerica.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>In the wake of the recent Occupy Wall Street protests, it\u2019s hard to deny the effect the recent economic crisis has had on people in North America.
