{"id":6297,"date":"2013-02-20T09:00:07","date_gmt":"2013-02-20T17:00:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=6297"},"modified":"2013-02-19T11:51:20","modified_gmt":"2013-02-19T19:51:20","slug":"camosun-alumna-a-business-world-success","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2013\/02\/20\/camosun-alumna-a-business-world-success\/","title":{"rendered":"Camosun alumna a business-world success"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Manjit Bains knows what it\u2019s like to start from the bottom, and she worked hard to reach the top.<\/p>\n<p>Bains, now the vice-president of Consumer Protection BC, started off at Camosun College in the \u201980s and graduated with three business diplomas, in finance, accounting, and general business. From there she trained in leadership and corporate governance. To add to her large list of credentials, she also obtained a designation as a Certified Management Accountant, which she used to open doors of opportunity in government.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_6299\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-6299\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Manjit-001.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-6299 \" alt=\"\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Manjit-001.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"280\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Manjit-001.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Manjit-001-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/02\/Manjit-001-180x119.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-6299\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Manjit Bains aims for a balance between her career, her personal life, and giving back to the community (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ve gone from being a file clerk and a courier to processing travel claims, to working in a court system, the criminal justice system, the information technology world, finance, and now I\u2019m in consumer protection,\u201d says Bains.<\/p>\n<p>Bains says she\u2019s happy where her education, experiences, and career have taken her. She helped build Consumer Protection BC into the organization it is today and is proud of how that vision has taken form by helping consumers and businesses.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt really comes down to helping those people who need help,\u201d she says. \u201cIt\u2019s protecting the rights of consumers, but at the same time you\u2019re also levelling the playing field for businesses, which is the heart of what my training is all about. So it\u2019s a nice balance between consumers and businesses.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bains\u2019 passion for helping the community doesn\u2019t stop there. She\u2019s heavily involved with multiple charities and organizations and is currently on the board of directors for the Victoria Hospitals Foundation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI am a firm believer of volunteering, not only to build a network, but I think we all need to be responsible for the communities we live in,\u201d she says. \u201cI feel as business leaders in the community you need to have a balance with your personal life the career that you choose, but you have to give back to the community.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Bains says Camosun helped her on her career path to get where she is today. A lot of that help came from Camosun instructors, whom Bains respects immensely.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey inspired us with the fact that they were not just teaching the academics; they were actually teaching us real-life experience,\u201d she says. \u201cThey had instant credibility in our eyes, in that they could take something that was very hard textbook learning and convert, and transition, and translate that into a way we could understand by providing us with those real-life examples.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>With so much experience under her belt, Bains is able to share a valuable piece of advice with the students at Camosun.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you can build on your network very early on it\u2019s going to help you in all kinds of ways,\u201d she says. \u201cSo don\u2019t always focus on the academics, but learn that you\u2019re in an environment at Camosun that\u2019s so invaluable, it\u2019s important as you move forward. Because those people that are in your classroom are going to be the future leaders.
