<\/a>And although the solos and drumstick acrobats that most high-profile drummers pull off on a nightly basis may seem a little egotistical, as Zoro explains there\u2019s a big difference between confidence and arrogance.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere\u2019s a certain amount of ego in doing anything. I don\u2019t think drummers are, as a rule, are egotistical as a breed, they\u2019re very much like a brotherhood and a humble sect of the music industry,\u201d says Zoro (real name: Daniel Donnelly). \u201cI find most drummers are confident without being arrogant.”<\/p>\n
Zoro\u2019s upcoming drum clinic should come natural to him as he\u2019s spent a lot of his career mentoring and teaching other drummers, as well as being a professional speaker and author of drum-related books. According to Zoro, it\u2019s never too late to pick up a pair of drumsticks and start banging away.<\/p>\n
\u201cAnyone can start at any age; it\u2019s never too late, as long as you\u2019re a learner,\u201d he says. \u201cIf you\u2019re going to make a career out of it, the earlier the better, but there\u2019s no reason why someone just can\u2019t start and enjoy it for the instrument it is.\u201d<\/p>\n
Zoro\u2019s playing has garnered him many awards in rhythm and blues and funk drumming, and one of his books celebrates his admiration for drummers that have honed their craft under the radar without necessarily becoming household names.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve always like the drummers that are part of the scene, and especially those that are behind the scenes, and my book is dedicated to all the drummers like that, especially the ones from rhythm and blues,\u201d he says, \u201cand they\u2019re not usually household names like Ringo Starr or John Bonham.\u201d<\/p>\n
As for his work recording and touring with Lenny Kravitz, Zoro explains that the connection between the two musicians runs much deeper than just sharing a recording studio or stage.<\/p>\n
\u201cI\u2019ve always enjoyed playing with Lenny. We\u2019re best of friends from since we were teenagers,\u201d he says. \u201cThere\u2019s a great spiritual and friendship connection with him. I enjoy the mutual passion we have for the music and the groove. Nothing is better than that.\u201d<\/p>\n
