In Jimmy Eat World\u2019s case, they didn\u2019t choose their name based on their musical capabilities; they chose it because of a hilarious moment in time, long ago.<\/p>\n<p>Some may speculate whether the name is in reference to vocalist\/guitarist Jim Adkins, but, in fact, the \u201cJimmy\u201d in the band name is in reference to guitarist Tom Linton\u2019s little brother, Jim.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen we were trying to figure out our band in 1993, my two little brothers Ed and Jim got in a big fight,\u201d says Linton. \u201cJim, who was a bit larger at the time, won and locked himself in his bedroom afterwards, so Ed drew a picture of Jim eating the world and wrote \u2018Jimmy Eat World\u2019 on it.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_7136\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-7136\" style=\"width: 231px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/JEW_RedStudio_8300_appvd-pr.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-7136\" alt=\"This July will mark Jimmy Eat World\u2019s first appearance in Victoria (photo provided).\" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/JEW_RedStudio_8300_appvd-pr-231x300.jpg\" width=\"231\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/JEW_RedStudio_8300_appvd-pr-231x300.jpg 231w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/JEW_RedStudio_8300_appvd-pr-300x388.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/JEW_RedStudio_8300_appvd-pr-180x233.jpg 180w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/06\/JEW_RedStudio_8300_appvd-pr.jpg 540w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 231px) 100vw, 231px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-7136\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">This July will mark Jimmy Eat World\u2019s first appearance in Victoria (photo provided).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Jimmy Eat World have been around for more than 20 years now, but the band members were connected far before that.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c[Bassist] Rick [Burch] and I met when we were 12 years old, and Jim and [drummer] Zach [Lind] met when they were in preschool,\u201d says Linton. \u201cAlthough we were each connected in some way or another, it wasn\u2019t until outside sources connected us in high school that we formed as a band.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>For each album Jimmy Eat World puts out, they have different goals making it unique from the last. Right now their main goal is to write and produce music faster than ever.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cEven though our lifestyle is pretty busy on the road, usually en route to the next destination right after a concert, we\u2019ll most likely write a lot of music for our next album while we\u2019re on the road,\u201d says Linton.<\/p>\n<p>Some of the bands that first influenced Jimmy Eat World\u2019s sound are Duran Duran, NOFX, and Sonic Youth, although all of the music they listen to helps them define themselves.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBasically every musician we listen to and every interaction we encounter in life influences our writing,\u201d explains Linton. \u201cLots of our lyrics reflect conversations we\u2019ve had or overheard.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Jimmy Eat World has had many pivotal experiences as a band, from their first show to their first album, and, eventually, their first festival.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI love playing at festivals because it gives us a chance to share and experience other bands. When we play alone we don\u2019t get that same opportunity, so festivals always excite us,\u201d says Linton.<\/p>\n<p>For the upcoming Rock the Shores festival, Jimmy Eat World will be reunited with Weezer, a band that were on the same bill as Linton\u2019s most memorable concert.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen our album <i>Bleed America <\/i>came out, we went on tour with Tenacious D and Weezer,\u201d says Linton. \u201cThis was a big deal for us as it was one of the first really big shows we played.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Rock the Shores (featuring Jimmy Eat World)<br \/>\nJuly 13-14<br \/>\nJuan de Fuca Rec Centre<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/www.rocktheshores.com\" target=\"_blank\">rocktheshores.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Choosing your own band name can be liberating: musicians have the opportunity to create their own image with what they name their group.
