{"id":8098,"date":"2013-11-13T08:50:29","date_gmt":"2013-11-13T16:50:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=8098"},"modified":"2013-11-12T11:20:38","modified_gmt":"2013-11-12T19:20:38","slug":"kamloops-university-working-on-social-media-use-policy","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2013\/11\/13\/kamloops-university-working-on-social-media-use-policy\/","title":{"rendered":"Kamloops university working on social media use policy"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops, BC is working on creating a policy to outline appropriate online conduct for users associated with the postsecondary institution.<\/p>\n<p>The social media committee, coordinated by TRU\u2019s marketing and communications office, first met in April to begin a formal discussion about social media use within the TRU community.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_8099\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-8099\" style=\"width: 420px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/credit-jessica-klymchuk.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\" wp-image-8099 \" alt=\"Kamloops students are being scrutinized for social media activity (photo: Jessica Klymchuk). \" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/credit-jessica-klymchuk.jpg\" width=\"420\" height=\"278\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/credit-jessica-klymchuk.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/credit-jessica-klymchuk-300x198.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/11\/credit-jessica-klymchuk-180x119.jpg 180w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 420px) 100vw, 420px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-8099\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Kamloops students are being scrutinized for social media activity (photo: Jessica Klymchuk).<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>By the end of the academic year the university plans to have documented guidelines and recommendations, but not rules, for social media use.<\/p>\n<p>TRU currently monitors social media sites such as Facebook, Twitter, LinkedIn, Flickr, and sometimes Instagram.<\/p>\n<p>The social media page on TRU\u2019s website states \u201cour goal is to provide a community where people feel encouraged to share content and ideas in a respectful environment, and we reserve the right to remove posts that we feel undermine this goal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Associate vice president of marketing and communications Lucille Gnanasihamany began the initiative to form a more documented social media policy when she arrived at TRU last year.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile we don\u2019t have any control over personal sites, certainly with any of the channels that are affiliated with TRU we do ask people to conduct themselves in a fair manner,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the University of BC\u2019s social media guidelines state that inappropriate use of official or personal social media platforms is cause for disciplinary action.<\/p>\n<p>The guidelines outline conduct for faculty use, personal use, and official channel use. They say to never post anything you wouldn\u2019t share in a classroom, avoid posting anything that could reflect poorly on your colleagues, and don\u2019t represent your personal views as those of the university.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCodes of conduct and the expectations of respectful behavior at the university absolutely apply online,\u201d says TRU\u2019s director of innovation Brian Lamb, adding that if it\u2019s a question of inappropriate online conduct, a social media policy isn\u2019t necessarily required to reprimand a user because it\u2019s a behaviour issue.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s all overlapping circles and a lot of this does fall under conduct, and I think conduct has many arenas,\u201d says Gnanasihamany. \u201cIt could be an in-person conversation or an online conversation, but we monitor and we reserve the right to remind people when we feel they have crossed the line.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Thompson Rivers University (TRU) in Kamloops, BC is working on creating a policy to outline appropriate online conduct for users associated with the postsecondary institution.
