{"id":9334,"date":"2014-08-11T09:47:42","date_gmt":"2014-08-11T16:47:42","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=9334"},"modified":"2014-08-11T09:47:42","modified_gmt":"2014-08-11T16:47:42","slug":"a-message-from-the-camosun-college-student-society-hungry-for-affordable-education","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2014\/08\/11\/a-message-from-the-camosun-college-student-society-hungry-for-affordable-education\/","title":{"rendered":"<em>A message from the Camosun College student society<\/em>: Hungry for affordable education"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It\u2019s no secret that the cost of a postsecondary education is steadily climbing, causing students to feel the squeeze as it gets more and more difficult to pay bills, make sure rent is paid, and purchase food.<\/p>\n<p>The Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) offers a food bank at both Lansdowne and Interurban campuses, and its high rate of usage speaks to how students are being put in positions where they need to make decisions that no one should have to make, such as choosing between food and tuition fees.<\/p>\n<p>Going hungry shouldn\u2019t be necessary to get a postsecondary education, and getting by shouldn\u2019t mean that it\u2019s necessary for students to work while in school. Not only do high tuition fees generate additional stress, it\u2019s also a key indicator that our government isn\u2019t prioritizing postsecondary education.<\/p>\n<p>Getting an education is an investment for society that benefits everyone, and increasing tuition fees to the point that students are struggling to eat is a blatant sign that these fees aren\u2019t realistic for many students.<\/p>\n<p>The CCSS, as a member of the Canadian Federation of Students, is working hard to advocate for education that is accessible to all. Being a starving student shouldn\u2019t be such a standard phenomenon.<\/p>\n<p>If you are a student who\u2019s having a hard time getting the food you need to get the most out your education, there are a variety of services in the community that provide food to those struggling financially.
