{"id":947,"date":"2011-10-19T14:12:46","date_gmt":"2011-10-19T21:12:46","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/?p=947"},"modified":"2011-12-04T21:23:38","modified_gmt":"2011-12-05T05:23:38","slug":"current-swell-gauging-ebb-and-flow-of-local-audience","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/2011\/10\/19\/current-swell-gauging-ebb-and-flow-of-local-audience\/","title":{"rendered":"Current Swell gauging ebb and flow of local audience"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Contrary to common belief, Current Swell is not a surf band.<\/p>\n<p>Sure, the local indie\/folk\/rock group may have a name that fits that criteria, and the band members are all surfers, but in addition to not having traditional surf-sounding music, lead guitarist and vocalist Scott Stanton says that they rarely write songs about surfing.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t want to look like that band that\u2019s trying to sell surfing to help their career,\u201d says Stanton. \u201cIt\u2019s just something I do. I also golf, too.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>And the band also really likes to switch things up on a regular basis, which is why they can be found at festivals that cover a wide variety of genres.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI don\u2019t love doing the same thing over and over and over again,\u201d says Stanton. \u201cOnce in a while we\u2019ll play Skafest or Rifflandia, but it\u2019s not something I like to do over and over again, as a local band.\u201d<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_948\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-948\" style=\"width: 300px\" class=\"wp-caption alignleft\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Current-Swell_Dressing-Room_2011_Photo-Credit-Shane-Deringer-Photography_1MEG.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-948 \" src=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Current-Swell_Dressing-Room_2011_Photo-Credit-Shane-Deringer-Photography_1MEG-300x199.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"199\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Current-Swell_Dressing-Room_2011_Photo-Credit-Shane-Deringer-Photography_1MEG-300x199.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.nexusnewspaper.com\/newsite\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/10\/Current-Swell_Dressing-Room_2011_Photo-Credit-Shane-Deringer-Photography_1MEG-700x465.jpg 700w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-948\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Current Swell (photo by Shane Deringer)<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>It\u2019s not because Stanton and the boys from Current Swell have anything against local festivals\u2014quite the opposite, in fact\u2014it\u2019s because at some point during their career they decided to switch it up to avoid overplaying any markets.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe\u2019re from Victoria but we don\u2019t play in Victoria any more than Edmonton or Calgary,\u201d says Stanton. \u201cWe just don\u2019t want to oversaturate it. It\u2019s not something we take too seriously, but it\u2019s something we always consider when we\u2019re taking shows and thinking about festivals to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This came up when the band got an offer to play at Rifflandia this year; it would have been their third appearance at the local fest. But because Current Swell is releasing their latest album, <em>Long Time Ago<\/em>, on October 25\u2014and launching their tour in support of it at the McPherson on October 21\u2014they decided against having two local shows so close together. So while locals won\u2019t have too many opportunities to see the band, the select shows they do get to check out will be full of new material.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s been a while since we put out an album,\u201d explains Stanton. \u201cI found that our last album, we didn\u2019t even play a lot of the songs off it because we were still playing a lot of our older songs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Stanton says that one of the goals for <em>Long Time Ago<\/em> was to create an album that is more complete sounding than previous Current Swell records.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere\u2019s a lot of really good songs that didn\u2019t make it on the album because they didn\u2019t really fit,\u201d he says. \u201cSome of our albums have jumped all over the place a little bit, so this one we wanted to be more cohesive than our other ones.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Current Swell<br \/>\nMacpherson Playhouse<br \/>\nOctober 21, 8pm, $24.75<br \/>\n<a href=\"http:\/\/currentswell.com\" target=\"_blank\">currentswell.com<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Contrary to common belief, Current Swell is not a surf band.
