There are supports for transportation, there\u2019s a bit of emergency funding&#8230;\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Indigenous people are largely under-funded and ignored by the Canadian government, so when funding becomes available most schools try and get to it as fast as possible, says Simcoe.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have hired staff and faculty, got together a facility, student programs are being upgraded,\u201d she says. \u201cOur goal is that indigenous students will see themselves in what happens to them at the college. This funding will make all the difference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>On September 26, the Camosun\u2019s aboriginal education department was renamed to Ey \u0113\u0294 Sq\u0203\u2019lewen: the Centre for Indigenous Education and Community Connections. Ey \u0113\u0294 Sq\u0203\u2019lewen roughly translates to \u201cgood heart, good mind, good spirit.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201c Ey \u0113\u0294 Sq\u0203\u2019lewen was given to us by an elder,\u201d says Simcoe. \u201cWe love what it means. It\u2019s the thing we aspire to in our provision of education and services to indigenous students; we want good heart, good mind, and good spirit when we work with the students.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Student representatives at the Camosun College Student Society (CCSS) are also excited about the changes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPart of the reason for changing is bringing in that community component,\u201d says Shayli Robinson, First Nations director for the CCSS. \u201cIt really demonstrates that community engagement.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Robinson says the name change and ceremony represents a stronger interconnectedness within the centre and its community. The recent name-changing ceremony took place on the Lansdowne campus at Na\u2019tsa\u2019maht, Camosun\u2019s Aboriginal Gathering Place.<\/p>\n<p>Robinson also feels the new language is positive, having avoided the word \u201caboriginal.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI hate the word \u2018aboriginal,\u2019\u201d says Robinson. \u201cThe [prefix] \u2018ab\u2019 literally means \u2018away from.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Camosun College recently received $143,480 in government funding for academic upgrading for their indigenous education programs.
