Cirque du Soleil: Quidam thrills Victoria

Arts Web Exclusive

With the agility of athletes, skills of gymnasts, and grace of ballerinas, Cirque du Soleil’s multifaceted and super-talented performers kept the audience’s hearts racing and jaws dropping during their performance of Quidam on September 5 at the Save-on-Foods Memorial Arena.

Quidam brings a bountiful performance combining what is real and surreal while featuring super-human talent. The story starts by character building with zany ring master John, tough-guy Boum-Boum, entertainment-seeking child Zoe, and her self-indulgent father and isolated mother.

Zoe’s imagination starts entertaining her when she is visited by Quidam, a headless suit-wearing man with an umbrella and bowler hat. Zoe takes Quidam’s bowler hat and heads into a surreal adventure alongside her new imaginary friends The Target and The Aviator.

Zoe explores her inner imagination, searching for insight on her parents’ lives as well as her own.

Live music, audience participation, aerial/acrobatic skills, and the underlying plot of Zoe’s family life make Quidam enriched with action during this high-intensity show that seems to fly by with all the action happening on stage at once.

Although the storyline is quite cryptic and leaves much to the imagination, the impressive line-up of acts (including the German Wheel, Spanish Webs, Aerial Hoops, and more) are prominent and are examples of the talent and training behind Quidam.

The lack of nets, harnesses, and safety cables kept audiences at the edge of their seats and in awe while the symbolism and storyline kept everyone’s mind racing.
