Nanaimo-born Allison Crowe is getting set to bring her Tidings concert to Victoria again. The independent singer-songwriter has toured internationally and recently appeared in a cameo role in last summer’s blockbuster Man of Steel. Yet, Crowe’s support for Victoria’s community soldiers on, as evidenced by the organizations this concert will be benefiting.

“When I do events in different towns, sometimes I partner up with different groups,” says Crowe. “Those groups in Victoria are Artemis Place and HepCBC [the Hepatitis C Education and Prevention Society]. We’ve been doing shows together for a long time. It’s kind of a fun thing because that gets me in touch with the community I’m playing in.”

HepCBC volunteer Cheryl Reitz is grateful for the generosity shown by Crowe.HepCBC is a volunteer-run non-profit organization that is primarily operated out of volunteers’ homes. Funds are tight, but they have hope.

“There are so many clinical trials out there and almost every one of them are having wonderful results,” says Reitz, “I’m 65 and I have pretty advanced cirrhosis of the liver because of the hep c. The virus is now gone, but I’m left with cirrhosis. So, I’ll be at risk for liver cancer for the next eight years. That’s why it’s really important for people to get tested and treated as soon as possible. We’re trying hard to get the message out.”

Artemis Place Society is also excited to join Crowe again this year. The society has supported teen girls and young mothers since 1971. Lisa Ellis, Artemis Place executive director, has firsthand knowledge of how effective this model can be; she utilized Artemis Place’s services in the ’80s herself.

“Allison just keeps coming back every year,” says Ellis. “The society is named after Artemis, the goddess who protects young women and young mothers. I always say that Allison is our Artemis; she’s watching over us.”

But Crowe is more than a charity supporter and musician; she is a successful entrepreneur. A wonderful role model for any Camosun College student, she’s learned all about balancing business with music.

“Sometimes it’s more one than the other,” says Crowe, “depending on what’s happening. Right now, we are playing music, and sometimes it’s the planning, which is a different thing, and sometimes it’s the writing, which is a totally creative.”

And to all the students out there, Crowe says, “Keep at it and never get tired of learning.”
