Equilibre, the third full-length from French electronic-pop duo The Pirouettes, is an upbeat, calming, and invigorating double album—two records that mix the two members’ points of view—that that had me groovin’.

Leading off this album is “Allo,” a slow number perfect for what I was doing the first time I spun it: making lunch on a rainy day. The song immediately made me groove with the beat, forget the stressors of the day, and want some more of this hip and modern band. With a definite nod to some ’70s retro-wave pop, the album is a fresh take on electronic pop in 2021. The mix was one thing that stood out throughout this album: in “Allo,” incoming and outgoing notification sounds had me checking my phone more than once, but they’re blended into the music really well.

Songs like the title track and “Comment ça fait” serve as a showcase for a wide vocal range, proving that a good voice never goes unnoticed. This multi-layered album proves that even if lyrics are sung in a language you don’t speak, good music has plenty to offer.
