The other outbreak: Camosun announced a measles vaccination clinic to open on both campuses in the February 18, 1997 issue of Nexus. This initiative was in response to an outbreak of red measles that saw 66 confirmed cases on the lower mainland in the previous two weeks. Oh, to go back to the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, when cases in BC had not yet reached the hundreds, and people were stuck at home fearfully making sourdough bread and gardening.

Third-wave feminism: This issue also offered an avant-garde and intellectual take on what it really means to be a feminist. The writer stressed that the feminist movement was suffering from an overbearing presence of the middle-class white woman’s agenda, which “can foster classist and racist tendencies under the guise of ‘social activism.’” I think a lot of people in today’s Instagram-activist era would benefit from being reminded of this.

Victoria opens first car share: On February 14, 1997, the Victoria Car-Share Cooperative opened its first pod in James Bay. The co-op’s two cars were available to book over the phone, their keys to be picked up in a lock box. At the time of publication they had 20 members, and noted plans to publish their info on the “World Wide Web.” Today, car-share services are abundant in Victoria, and you’re likely to see Evo vehicles all over the place downtown, as well as in their parking spots at Camosun.
