The Nexus summer movie preview guide

Arts April 6, 2022

Congratulations—we’ve made it to the end of the winter semester, which means that it’s time to talk about the summer movie season. From roaming dinosaurs to interacting superheroes, these six summer flicks are guaranteed to give students good entertainment value for their money. See you all at the movies.

Nope

Calling all horror movie fans: Nope, the newest film by Oscar-winning writer Jordan Peele, is hitting cinemas this July. This film follows residents of an old Californian town that witness an abnormal event that seems to be impacting their life. Not a lot is known about this movie, but just from this description and Peele’s track record, this sounds like one spooky good time.

Top Gun: Maverick

I feel the need… the need for some hot, buttered popcorn, and you will too, as soon as you see the trailer for Top Gun: Maverick. This film looks dazzling, and this is coming from someone who once called the original a boring pile of crap. From the breathtaking plane sequences to its seemingly improved dramatic tension, this film looks like a massive step up from the first one, and I can’t wait to see what Tom Cruise and his team have come up with when Top Gun: Maverick takes off into movie theatres this May.

Brad Pitt stars as assassin Ladybug in Bullet Train, which is being released in theatres in July (photo provided).

Bullet Train

This looks really fun. Directed by action director David Leitch of Deadpool 2, this film follows Ladybug (played by Brad Pitt), an assassin hired for one last job. The job involves stealing a mysterious briefcase located on a Morioka-bound bullet train. Much to his chagrin, Ladybug quickly learns that he isn’t the only assassin after the briefcase. You can tell from the trailer that this looks to be a fast and funny flick that will totally be worth students’ time and money. Be sure to check it out when it opens this July.

Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness

Coming off of 2016’s magical smash, this sequel fellows Steven Strange as he is forced to face dire consequences from tampering with the Multiverse, as shown in Spider-Man: No Way Home. From the inclusion of Evil Doctor Strange, who we were introduced to in the Marvel television series What If?, to the possible introduction of certain X-Men characters, as hinted at in the film’s trailers, this movie looks amazing, and I’m really excited to see how it all unfolds in May.

Thor: Love and Thunder

The MCU’s second entry to this summer’s filmography follows its title hero Thor as he travels across space to face new and old enemies while at the same time having to come to terms with his own destiny as king of Asgard. This film looks like a lot of fun, and I can’t wait to see what it has in store for us this July.

Jurassic World Dominion

When I was a kid, I was a huge dinosaur nerd, so the Jurassic Park movies have always been really compelling to me. That’s why, while I had big issues with the last two Jurassic World movies, I’m still immensely excited for the concluding chapter of the Jurassic Park saga when it drops in June. The trailers look amazing and make the movie sound at the very least fun but mindless, which is what most summer movie-goers are looking for.
